Brewing in the current hot weather?
Brewing in the current hot weather?
The room i usually brew in is at an ambient temp of 24.c lately my shed is at 20.c . I am thinking of fermenting out in the shed do you think it will be ok? It is much cooler out there than in the house and temps are not dropping low at the moment.
The yeast i have for this batch is safale s-04. Google is bringing the fermentis site up as malicous so i can't check fermenting temps.

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
Hi,
Temprature wise you should be ok...
Personally if you don't NEED to brew in summer I wouldn't... and I don't....
Two batches of beer I made last July were spoiled one by too high a temp and the other by a wild yeast infection...
You will need to ensure sanitation is especialy good to reduce the chance of a wild yeast getting to work on your wort before the S04 does... Then careful again at the bottling/barrelling stage...
Maybe I've had a bad experience but I know others on the forum who also dont brew in summer, but this could be for different reasons
By the end of August these wild yeast spores have reduced dramaticly...
If you do go ahead then, good luck to you!

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
Is your shed permanently in shade?
I would have thought any sun on a shed would cause the temp to zoom up in no time at all.
It's hard to brew decent beer in the current temperatures unless you have some sort of cooler for the FV.
Interestingly I also get security warning about the fermentis site, booth from Google and also from my anti-virus software

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
The space I brew in reaches over 30C at the moment. Fortunately (and rather surprisingly) the chiller system I rigged up for the fermenter seems to be keeping the temperature in the fermenter at 20-21C. I doubt it will do much when it comes to chilling the beer down further....

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
Sort yourself out a temperature controlled fermentation fridge (or similar) you won't look back. Brewing only in winter is dark ages stuff
Though I am sorry to hear that your summer brew got infected Manx Guy...wouldn't want that on anyone m8

Thanks!
It tasted rank!
Not something you woul want to happen to anybody...
I just brew alot in MArch and April and so far the stocks are lasting! But SWMBO is a bit annoyed about the amount of beer crates (~11) containing beer stored under the stairs and in the utility room...
I started May with 80 litres of beer of various types all stored in Grolsch swing tops!
I'm about half way thru this lot now.... So its likely there will be lots of brewing activity come the end August/early september

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
Brew something that likes it hot, WLP568 (one of their two saison yeasts) has an optimum temperature range of 20-26 degrees celsius
I realise this doesn't help you with S04 but worth thinking about if you want to put another brew on while it is hot

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
I brewed on Sunday. Look,I had to or I would have experienced a catastrophic beer-famine somewhere down the line. Anyways,I've no means of temp control - just bunged it in the space under the stairs. I didn't bother checking the temp as I've no means of bringing it down, only bringing it up when it's cold. I used Notts yeast, pitched on Sunday night and it had done on Tuesday. 1046 to 1010. That's outrageously fast for Notts so obviously the temp was way too high. I just hope the Great Beer God in the sky is smiling on me and it won't turn out bad. I hate summer.
Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
Yeah the shed is down the side of my house. The house is on one side of the shed then garages the other. I alos have big trees either end. I often sit in there whislt supping a beer lol. (it's my brew shedboingy wrote:Is your shed permanently in shade?

Ive just spent a fortune on corny kegs, gas a fridge freezer for a kegerator and then the cost of the equipment for all grain. I think if i ask the wife for another fridge/freezer for a fermentation chamber i will be living in the shed lol.
Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
Just found some info saying safale is ok upto 24.c so i think im going to go for it and ferment in the shed. Just checked the temp now and it's still at 21.c so with the 3 degress fermentation is supposed to create im going to be pushing it but.... i neeed to brew.

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
Not practical for those of you brewing large batches, but for those who like to brew smaller quantities as i do (1-2 gallon bins) i have found a cool bag and a few icepacks work quite well.
I haven't started brewing anything yet but have been monitoring the temperature, it appears to be averaging at about 17 degrees and probably held that for at least 12 hours although i wasn't paying too much attention early on since i wasn't expecting it to work that well at all, so i might be a bit off.
To save cash and because there doesn't appear to be many places selling the plastic ice packs i bought 2 packs of these so i have plenty to cycle through

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
I brew in my garage, which is on the side of the house which does not see full sun at the height of the day
However, i am guessing it gets upto mid 20's
Brewed on Wedneday and have not yet checked SG to see effects of the hot weather. Used wyeast 1084 irish ale yeast. I'm keeping everything crossed
Strange thing, speaking about airborn yeasts, i left my hydromitre tube full of wort after checking SG
. Next day there was a head on it
Could this have also gotten into my brew

Hmm
Seems a likely explanation....
Another good reason to ensure you kep the wort covered until you pitch the yeast!
:~)
I'm sure your main batch will be fine as it soundlike you pitched a good active yeast...

Re: Brewing in the current hot weather?
My garage is normally ok for summer temps. but this week the temp. started to creep up so I put the FV onto 2 freezer ice packs and it dropped to where I wanted it. Changing them ever 2 hours has maintained a constant temp.
