Fumigation of my brewery

Post by Les_Howarth » Sun Jun 27, 2010 6:42 pm

I've just ordered some of these http://www.petremedies.co.uk/Flea-Contr ... 3-124-226/ in an attempt to control a serious spider problem I have in my brewing room (garage). According to what I've read about the agent involved it is also effective on some spiders and leaves no residue. Needless to say I'll have no exposed beer or ingredients when I set it off. Even if it doesn't kill all of the spiders it will kill off whatever they are feeding on and can't do them any good. If it kills some of the woodlice and centipedes and various other creepy crawlies it will be a bonus. I don't expect that any of the creepy crawlies cause a serious problem with by brewing but I can't see that they and their webs can be doing any good.

Has anyone else ever tried fumigation?

Cobwebs? Essential in any good lambic brewery

My brewery has quite a few spiders and other life forms....which is why I brew under airlock.

Steve,

I'm not a big fan of lambic beers so I have no intention of ever trying to brew one nor deliberately infect my kit with a wild yeast. :-&

I don't use open fermenters and I'm sure that the spiders and their webs don't do any real harm. I just don't like the feel of all the webs against my legs when I walk in there wearing shorts.

As it happens the fumigators had absolutely no effect on the things #-o so I need a plan B... :-k

Cheers,

just get a vac and start vaccing them up!! get into all the nooks and crannies and keep doing it every day till you notice the population is reduced!!

the next problem you'll have is when the weather turns cold as they will all move in again from outside, which in an outhouse or garage is very hard to prevent. at the and of winter my conservatory is bloody full of them, and that is really the only way I have found to control them!

encouraging the bigger spiders can help too as they eat the smaller ones, but this is not an exact science.

If you think your garage is bad you should try owning a boat. Spiderville....

I agree. Unless you can create a perfectly airtight seal to your brewery space nature's agents of chaos will find a way in

I have the same issue, if I don't keep on top of it with regular cleaning the bloody garage and sheds just fill to the rafters with creepy-crawlies. I'm afraid this particular jobs calls for regular doses of elbow grease
