Wanted - AG good Hoegarrden clone

Pretty much as it says on the tin!

Want to get as close as possible with this one, would like a yeast recommendation to compliment it as well.

Much appreciated.

50/50 flaked wheat (not wheat malt) and pilsener malt gets that Hoegaarden lightness and thickness. Lightly hopped with Hallertauer M and with coriander seeds and orange peel in the boil gets the taste.

Yeh pretty much what dave-o said but i thought it was hopped with Saaz, could be wrong tho.
U could also add a touch of Belgian Aromatic Malt as I've seen some Belgian Wit recipes do, never done it myself tho.
Or look for a Celis White clone on US forums, thats supposed to be how Hoegaarden was before it was dumbed down.
Wyeast 3944 is prob the yeast to go for.

Thanks for the help guys.

Being a Mac user, unfortunately I don't have the chance to use BeerSmith. Would anyone have a recipe for a 50/50 pilsner/flaked wheat hopped with Saaz + coriander seed and orange peel. Small brew length, prob 12L.

I would sit down and work it out myself, but I'm quite new to the world of AG!

I think what you are asking for is a RECIPE :!: Sorry, I don't know one, but I too have played about with the ingredients the previous posts mention. Come on lads, someone must have an actual recipe for him :?:

Stick Hoegaarden in the search box. There are quite a few recipes on here, just be careful with the spelling..

Hi,

Hope I'm not hijacking the OP...

What Mash schedule would you recommend? I guess low-ish so its not too sweet/finishes on the dryer side... And a single step infusion?

:)
I've only made Kit wheat beers so far but once I've more SG's under my belt I'd like to try a hoegaarden clone - ideal summer drinking!

Really you are meant to do a cereal mash with that much flaked wheat. But that is a hassle. I have just done a normal mash with those amounts and it has worked out fine. I probably got a lower efficiency than i could have, but hey ho.

There is the possibility of a stuck mash, i suppose, but I have never had that problem, even using those ratios with extra flaked oats too. Maybe i've been lucky.

Cheers dave-o. Exactly what I wanted.

I will probably go with just a normall mash schedual, not quite ready to go into decoctions and all that palava!

I think I read somewhere that a few teaspoons of ordinary white flour helps keep the hazy look of Hoegaarden, hope this helps. Not tried it yet because I think it may contribute to my already regular stuck sparges. Remember to de-wax the oranges in some warm water before using too.

hey,

I too have heard the trick with the ordinary white flour... But I think it was added to the boil....

:)

I guess also the yeast plays apart in the cloudyness of the beer when poured....

I used WB-06 but after 12 weeks in the bottle the yeast has settled out any way...

I find by pouring the beer into a chilled jug and swirling the botles as the last few mls go in it give a nice cloudy drink...

Starngely my wit is almost copper coloured!
But it tastes good, more Blue Moon than Hoegaarden but close enough!

:D

give it a chance for the coriander flavour to subdue as it can taste like burnt PVC to amazing over 6 weeks

some of my best were my first when i was very hevey handed with the coriander and orange, because of the lead time its still a work in progress......... 8)
