5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
I have been thinking. I love hops a lot. But I can't exactly be knocking back Imperial IPAs on a school night with any regularity.
I was thinking all the IBUs coming from late hops. Having something like 400g of late and dry hops to something like a 1:1 IBU:OG ratio.
Has anybody done anything along these lines?
Any ideas on if it would work?

Re: 5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
I haven't used that many hops, but, most of my brews now are all late hopped with almost NO full boil hops. I tend to use about 5g of Northern Brewer for the boil and add between 70g to 120g of flavour and aroma late on.

I do it all the time, I dump 250g in late for a 10 gallon batch for just about all my pale ales, do that with Amarillo and you're flying.
Get your dry hops in too, 20 - 50g per 5 gallons as a starting point.

I was thinking something like this:
Prepare Ingredients for Mash
Amount Item Type
3.50 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter (5.9 EBC) Grain
1.50 kg Lager Malt (3.9 EBC) Grain
0.50 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 10L (19.7 EBC) Grain
0.45 kg Munich Malt (17.7 EBC) Grain
0.30 kg Wheat Malt, Bel (3.9 EBC) Grain
OG:1059
Boil for 60 min Boil Ingredients
Boil Amount Item Type
15 min 35.00 gm Ahtanum [6.00 %] (15 min) Hops
15 min 35.00 gm Amarillo Gold [9.50 %] (15 min) Hops
15 min 35.00 gm Centennial [10.00 %] (15 min) Hops
15 min 35.00 gm Simcoe [12.90 %] (15 min) Hops
-- Steep Hops
Amount Item Type
35.00 gm Ahtanum [6.00 %] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops
35.00 gm Amarillo Gold [9.50 %] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops
35.00 gm Centennial [11.00 %] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops
35.00 gm Simcoe [12.90 %] (30 min) (Aroma Hop-Steep) Hops
-- Add Ingredients to Fermenter
Amount Item Type
30.00 gm Centennial [10.00 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops
30.00 gm Simcoe [12.90 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops
30.00 gm Ahtanum [6.00 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops
30.00 gm Amarillo Gold [9.50 %] (Dry Hop 7 days) Hops
Edit: IBUs 57
So Basically taking what I would do for an Imperial IPA and lowering the OG and IBUs.
What does everybody think?
Considering replacing the Centenial with Chinook which I like a bit better, but they are more harsh I think also.

Amarillo in there to for you Geof man.

Re: 5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
You've basically just posted a West Coast American IPA recipe... this is your school night drink??
Looks good though!

Re: 5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
Its redunkulus amounts of hops, probably double what I would use for that OG normally but I see what you mean. Think I should knock it back by 1%abv? Then take one of the 15 min additions and switch it to flame out?
Re: 5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
I would drop it down to 1.050... Maybe tone down the dry hops a bit too but, whatever. I think it looks good. I have never tried Ahtanum, I may make an Ahtanum pale ale as my next beer. Haven't brewed in yonks.
Re: 5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
I think I will drop it to 1050 like you say.
I think I will keep the hopping the same I think it wouldn't be over done with the kettle hops I could over do it if it finishes too low with the dry hops. But I will dry hop it in two batches and make sure its not *too hoppy* if there is such a thing,
.
Do you have room to brew in the Mrs place?

Re: 5-6% abv beer with Imperial IPA level late hopping?
Sounds like it should be a good one! Low gravity and hoppy - not bitter.
