recipe plan for first extract

Post by nobby85 » Mon Jul 19, 2010 8:09 pm

hello all,

so im doing my first extract soon and thought id post what recipe im gonna try. its not really based on anything and just thought id give something random a go! The recipe below is meant for a 5 gallon brew but for my first one il probably halve it all so if it all goes terribly wrong or needs some fine tuning i can have another go soon after!

so here it is.

Malt Extract Pale 3000 grams
Crystal Malt 200 grams
Chocolate Malt 70 grams
Caramalt 150 grams

30 grams of both of both Bobeck and fuggles for 60 mins then a further 10 grams of each for 30 mins.

coming out on Beer Engine at colour 37 EBC with bitterness at 38 EBU.

any thoughts? comments?

sounds ok to me, i've done 3 so far and not followed any recipe, it all seems to come out drinkable, i'd go for the whole 5 gallon just make sure everything is clean you should be ok.

good luck and have fun!

Is there any reason why the second lot are going in for 30min? I´ve always been told bittering hops are best left for the hour, taste hops for 10/15 min and aroma hops are stuck in after you´ve switched the heat off.
Why not stick them in ten min before the end? You´ll get the essential oils that would be lost with any more boiling.
Evolution didn't end with us growing thumbs.

the hand is fine now thanks, first time using my new boiler for any prolonged period so wasnt expecting the amount of steam! apart from a few hicups everything seems to have gone fine.. its happily bubbling away now so fingers crossed!
