I would love to get my hands on a good load of apples. However orchards seem to be few and far between in Leeds :D. I have been keeping an eye on about a dozen feral apple tree in my area though! :D

I have an apple tree in the garden which I have been eyeing up all year ready to make cider. The crop this year is much bigger than last years, the branches are bending with all the weight! I've no idea what type of apple it is, I just know they taste a bit sour. So I'm thinking of mixing in some shop bought sweet apples to make me a nicer cider.
I have no equipment so planning on buying a juicer and using that, juiced has the added bonus I could juice anything afterwards!
A rough guess by me would be that I have maybe 15 - 20 kilos of apple on the tree, no idea how much cider that will make me, but I'm excited!
Any tips would be welcome!

I'd be interested in buying some of the apples, too.

Maybe cider fans from the same area could club together to buy in bulk, then share the apples?

I'm Manchester(ish) and keen to give it a go.

This could be a great topic - please keep us informed!

this is a brilliant idea. spread the word, and share the apples! i would give my eye teeth to get my hands on some kingston black and dabnett but there is no real cider tradition in northern ireland. just comercial orchards full of bloody bramleys. i do however know of a few spots on public land that gave me two car loads last year, and now a big old estate with an orchard of traditional irish breeds that ive now got access to. (still no cider apples tho) so ive bought a garden shredder as there is only so much a piece of 4x2 can get through!
if people want to build a press i suggest getting your hands on an old tom drum. makes a fantastic piston press when combined with a frame, tray, ply plunger and a bottle jack. only cost me a tenner to make last year after i got my hands on a scafold frame. have a look at the happy cider makers below:

and the year before with a 4x2 frame that didnt last too long...

This sounds like fun :D

I take it for a tonne of apples they would be crated and delivered by pallet courier or similar. Any idea of the price for a crate or tonne whatever measure they come in? I can arrange a pallet courier so could take care of that end myself. Could possibly be after upto 2 tonnes.

My mother has an apple tree she calls "black kingston" I presume they are Kingston black that you refer to, excellent.
It a heavey cropper, with a good size, softish, red/green apple?

I've a few tree's myself, unknown varieties.
I'll certainly try a 5 gallon batch or two!

I'm in the middle of obtaining all the juice from my apples, the SG is just a tad over 1050. Having to take a break as the motor is over heating!
