This any use? - What weights of chemicals look like

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

This any use? - What weights of chemicals look like

Post by Naich » Tue Aug 10, 2010 11:01 pm

My water treatment calls for 0.56g of Calcium Chloride in the mash water. Given that my scales are probably accurate to about 2g with a resolution of 1g, this is hard to measure. In the past I've multiplied it by 8 measured it out and divided the result in 1/2 3 times, but this is a pain in the bum.

So, having a set of scales at work with a resolution of 0.001g, I used them to measure out quantities of various chemicals and photographed the size of the little piles next to a 5p piece. So if you want to know what 0.25g, 0.5g, 1g or 2g of Calcium Chloride, gypsum and Magnesium Sulphate look like, here are the pictures -

To use, simply make a little pile of chemicals that looks like the one in the corresponding picture and it'll weigh about the same. I've no idea how accurate this will be, so use at your own risk!

I gave up on weighing out my salts last time, it's too hit and miss. Just used the values in the back of BYOBRA for tsp measurements. Hit 5.3pH spot on twice since then so seems to be good enough. Although, the CaCl being in flakes makes it a bit inaccurate

FV: -
Conditioning: AG34 Randy's Three Nipple Tripel 9.2%, AG39 APA for a mate's wedding
On bottle: AG32 Homegrown Northdown ESB, AG33 Homegrown Cascade Best
On tap: -
Garden: 2x cascade, 2x Farnham whitebine (mathon), 2x northdown, 1x first gold

Looks in book... Argh! Why didn't I see that bit at the back? That's a far better way of doing it #-o
