Bottling - Sample bottles

Post by kane » Sun Aug 29, 2010 2:03 pm

Hi guys,
I've just brewed a yorkshire bitter (brupaks craftsman ingredient kit).
It has been in the primary FV for just over a week now and fermentation has stopped (hydrometer readings stable over 2 days).
I'm planning on bottling this up, but i think im going to leave it another week just to give it chance to clear a little.

The plan is to transfer it to a bottling bucket and batch prime it, however i've not done any bottling before so im thinking i might just siphon off a couple of pints into bottles straight from the FV today,
and then prime with half a teaspoon (or less?) of sugar?
Just to test my capping skills and to see what the carbonation will be like.

Anyone see any issues with this? obviously there will be more chance of infection, so should i just wait the week and then bottle all in one go?

Thanks
Kane

I would wait and do it all at once. Priming a couple of bottles will show little or no carbonation by the time you plan to do the rest. Leaving for week, as you say will help to clear it a little and make doubly sure you get no unexpected bottle bombs.

Bottle it all in one go when it's ready. If you want to practise bottling, just do a couple with cold soda water or something fizzy, gently syphoned in, so you can learn how hard to hit the capper and be confident you've sealed the bottle.

If you ever go over to using a keg, it's worth doing half a dozen bottles to stash away or to use as a comparison to the kegged beer.

Well i left it an extra week, so it has been bottled up for just over a week now.

I bulk primed with caster sugar all but two bottles as an experiment.
The ones primed are already carbonated and taste great :D just need to leave them a while now to clear up.
The ones i didn't prime havn't been tested yet, but they look much clearer than the others. Don't know how long i should wait before testing though.

If i had more bottles i would be cooking up another brew already haha
