MT build with pics

Post by Kev888 » Sun Sep 26, 2010 5:07 pm

Finally made some progress with my new MT this weekend. Its not likely to set the world alight with revolutionary new ideas, but as always I had advice from forum members so thought I'd post some pics of the result.

The tank was very much like the one I used for my boiler build, only this time smaller at 68litres. I cut the top off and made a wooden hoop for the top, which was covered in foil tape on its upper surface. I then glued on the ring and lagged the tank's sides in five layers of closed cell sleeping mat (fewer around the handle though). The underside was covered in 25mm celotex much as in my boiler build.

Then to make it wipe-clean (and shiny :-) ) I wrapped it in bubble/foil insulation from B&Q - this seems to be tougher than some I tried before and more immune to steam and water. I then fixed an aluminium strip around the top with stainless screws, partly to tie in the top of the silver stuff and partly to form a small lip or rim for the lid. i then ran food-grade silicone around the joins between the foil covered ring and the alu strip and tank walls:
Image

The tank drains from the bottom and also has a radius where the walls meet the floor. So I was able to make quite a simple false bottom that sat on the radius and one central support (an M6 stainless bolt with washers and nuts fixing the bolt at the right height). The false bottom was perforated stainless with 2mm holes and some beer line cut open and wrapped around to stop scratching (I may need to add a handle in addition to the bolt sticking up):

Then the lid. This was a first for me; I've never routed aluminium before. I screwed an alu sheet to some plywood and routed a disc just big enough to fit the MT's rim. Then I made a spiral shaped sparge arm from some 10mm microbore I had left over from my IC - this just seemed like the simplest way to spread the sparging over the surface of the MT - and drilled around 40x 1mm diameter holes along the spiral. This was stepped up to 15mm and fitted into a street elbow soldered into the back of a tank connector that I'd drilled out to accept it.
Image
I covered the top of the lid in 25mm of celotex insulation and added a 3/4"BSP thread to the tank connector - as thats the size I'm going to terminate all my flexible piping in, using 3/4" tap connectors with rubber O rings instead of fibre washers.

Then I added a valentine arm (I think its called, anyway) so that I can adjust the height of liquor during fly sparges of different quantities. The arm has 3/4" BSP female and male threads so that the same thread is presented for my flexible piping with or without the arm in place. The arm has a sideways step just after the female threads, so that the tap lever can be opened when the arm is vertical:

Finally, I covered the rim of the MT in cling film, ran some clear food grade silicone all around over the top of it, and squashed down the lid onto it. The idea being that it'll cast a silicone rubber seal around the lid, but being mostly enclosed in non-permiable materials its taking a long time to cure so no photos of that yet.

Finally, this ever-lasting upgrade looks like it could be nearing completion!

Cheers,
Kev

I'm very much hoping so; my old equipment was getting too annoying so I resorted to extract and partial grain a lot, but since I began building this I've only had time for kits. Its been interesting actually; they're much better than they used to be years ago, but I'm getting keen to start fiddling with ingredients again!

Cheers mate! I think mines just a different type of build - there's no way the silver foil and wooden rings and stuff could take the type of heavy professional use that yours can, what I've done is far too fragile and couldn't be used with gas. I'll probably only use it a couple of times a month for full batches so hopefully it'll last a while for me.

That's really nice work. Seems a shame to get it dirty by putting mash in it :)

Ha, Thanks!
I'm getting impatient now and can't wait to get it brewing, so its prestine condition is likely to be quite short lived - I'm looking forward to fiddling with different ingredients and yeasts and so on, instead of pipes and insulation. Just need to get it all together on some sort of frame and sort out the pump(s) and pipes really.

The next step will be following in your footsteps, to begin taking over the garage..

It was quite close for me, too! Fortunately there was a light-bulb moment before I actually did it.

Not to say that there won't be other things - once its set up I'll probably go through the process just with water. I need to work out how much the MT cools the new liquor and what the dead-spaces and actual heating times are and so on. Although that said, if I'm doing it anyway maybe I should risk a proper brew at the same time. Hmmm.

Probably still a few weeks away yet though; need to sort out the garage and build a frame or something to support the tanks but I'm required to be sociable over the next few weekends.

Cheers

out of interest mate, how are you attaching all your shiny bubble wrap? is there an adhesive especially for it?

I'm just using the self-adhesive foil tape that they use for duct work - I got it from here but I'm sure lots of other places also do it. Its stickier than duck tape which is handy, but it therefore needs a peel-off backing which is a bit annoying to deal with sometimes. I've only really got it outside the insulation, so I haven't tested it being directly against the hot metal except in a few small places.

I did consider adding a dash of impact adhesive until I found its not recomended for use on anything warm. But with the camping mats and shiny wrap pulled reasonably snugly they don't seem to want to shift about on the tank at the moment so i've not felt the need to glue it; I guess time will tell if it stays that way.

Thats very kind, Scooby, thanks! I guess compared to hot water cylinders and so on it just didn't seem that different to what other people have done. I just hope it all works now :-)
