Lagale?

Post by Spud395 » Mon Sep 27, 2010 8:50 pm

Been trying to convert the missus to homebrew but she's having none of it.
To be fair she's more of a wine drinker and I had some not so successful wine brews back in the day.
Anyway this is to be the beer that will win her over, if she was drinking a beer Miller would be her poison.

Now I dont want Miller or anything like it, I'm attempting a light coloured, easy drinking ale that might pass as a lager to the general public. It's ok if some taste slips in here as I just may have 1or 2 of them myself

Lagale

Lager Malt 2.5 EBC 3000 grams 70.6%
Munich Malt 20 EBC 500 grams 11.8%
Vienna Malt 7.5 EBC 500 grams 11.8%
Caramalt 30 EBC 250 grams 5.9%

Hallertauer Mittlefruh Whole 4.3 % 60 mins 30 grams 33.3%
Hallertauer Mittlefruh Whole 4.3 % 20 mins 20 grams 22.2%
Saaz Whole 3.3 % 20 mins 20 grams 22.2%
Saaz Whole 3.3 % 5 mins 20 grams 22.2%

Final Volume: 23 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.041
Final Gravity: 1.010
Alcohol Content: 4% ABV
Mash Efficiency: 75 %
Bitterness: 25 EBU
Colour: 9 EBC

I'm planning to use Nottingham yeast at a low temp, will this end up being to tasty for normal people

Any thoughts on the recipe, good or bad.

To convert a wine drinker I'd go for something strong and full flavoured. My wine drinking friend loved Belgian beers but thought session beers were flavourless.

Maybe I wasnt easy to understand, the only beer she would be arsed drinking is Miller.
I'm trying for a blonde ale with some flavour, but overall fairly inoffensive to most.

I think your recipe has a good shot at that. It will probably be pretty toasty and malty as compared to something like Miller, so you could almost cut the vienna and munich quantities down some. For my taste, it looks good as is, so I guess it depends how close to Miller you really want to get.

you could do just pale malt with maybe 5% wheat for head.

This one was a success with lager drinkers and other halves alike:

4500g pale malt
250g wheat malt
250g caramalt

33g cascade - 15 minutes
33g cascade - 5 minutes
33g cascade - flame out

The all-late hops give it a very gentle bitterness but loads of fresh flavour. The colour and head retention is lager-like.

i did something similar a while back now and went down really well with the lager lovers

pale-4300g
cascade-20g-60min
cascade-60g-15min
cascade-20g-flame out
nice and citrusy and grapefruit favour as you'd expect from cascade,if i did it again would probably add a bit of wheat as deebee suggests and dave-o has done..

i have the same issue with some of my friends and swmbo, however she does love my stouts for some reason!

i just did a basic recipe with only pilsner malt and 45 grams of saaz hops (28g bittering, the rest for aroma), for as little flavour as possible, they all loved it, but the next 4 times i've brewed it i've slipped a bit more in, munich malt, bit of wheat ect, more hops, and none of them have notice thus far! :D

Feck them I'll like it;)

Just what I was going to suggest.
What herbs and spices does she like in food? You might want to slip a little bit of one of those in there. Or a hint of her favorite fruit.
I'm just here for the beer.
