I've been looking through the forum to try and work out how much starsan to use and don't seem to be getting a clear consensus on the subject!
Think I read in one post that it could be 1.5 ml in 1 lt of water, or 1ml in 500ml of water. I have some Tesco Ashbeck to use as the water (as recommended by other forummers!).
Can anyone give me a definitive answer to this question?
Also, if I'm using in a spray bottle, is it literally just a case of spraying it all over the thing i want to sanitise? I know it needs to stay wet/have contact time of 30 secs but should i let it dry before using the item?
How much Starsan to use?
Re: How much Starsan to use?
Hi, I was under the impression it was 1.6ml per 1 L, but you can go up to 2ml and still have a safe no-rinse solution. Obviously a pipette or syringe is essential.
Just spray the surface thoroughly, you'll see some foaming but this is nothing to worry about and allows the solution to get coat the surface and get into the corners. It does not need to dry, just upturn the item and allow it to drip dry for a minute. I just use a full litre of solution on brewday and slosh it around the FV to get good contact. Then I save a bit in a spray bottle to sanitise my thermostat probe, etc.

This thread has got some numbers in that seem to answer your questions. Be aware that the thread might well disappear soon at the author's request.
Re: How much Starsan to use?
Excellent, thanks for that guys...never looked in that part of the forum to find that info from daab!
Anyone know how soon after spraying they need to be used? Would it be ok to use within half an hour but not any longer?

Re: How much Starsan to use?
The instructions say "prepare a 300ppm Star San solution by dissolving 1.6 ml (2 ml is fine) of Star San into 1L of DI/RO or water with a low carbonate content", so I'm not quite sure how that figure is arrived at. The numbers don't seem to add up, but looking at this page, it seems the 300ppm figure is for the DDBSA component of the mixture, which makes up 15% of Star San. 100%/15% x 300 = 2000ppm (or 2 parts per 1000), which matches with the 2ml/l figure.dwhyte wrote:urgh my brain hurts![]()
