Coopers Real Ale Kit

Post by Hoppkins » Mon Feb 19, 2007 9:36 am

Bought this and added 800g light spray malt to it. The gravity was below what it should be so i added a little sugar to bring it up to 1.040.

Pitched NOttingham yeast with a little yeast nutrient and its been in the warm since 9am yesterday.

Very little activity on my airlock however it clearly IS moving. I'm guessing it's got to a slow start. I did aerate as well as possible and the water wasn't freezing as far as i could tell :/ (Cat broke thermometre)

to be honest i think watching turbo cider for so long has given me false expectations of airlock activity.

As long as the top of the fermentation lid is visibly pushed upward i have no worries :) Can't wait to try this. Gonna buy another ferm bin today, got another beer for my birthday (as well as mini mash stuff)...

Admirals Reserve :)

Hopkins, a little suggestion from me if I may :)
Place your fermenting bin on something to insulate it from cold floor tiles that it is sat upon.
You may find that it ferments a little better if the heat isn't being sucked out of it into the floor

I added (as per the instructions on the Coopers kit) the fermenting sugars to the boiled water poured on the wort and stirred. I added 3 liters of boiling water to the wort and malt and stirred vigoursly.

Is that enough? :( Is this spray malt going to mess it all up?

It's sitting on a cushiony pad on a carpet :)

Hrm, ok. Hopefully it will turn out ok :( Guess i'll take a sniff in a day and see.

I'm doing that kit now.
I used 500g of light powdered malt,
1kg of brewing sugar and ale yeast from my local shop.
I've got to say that it did nothing for 3 to 4 hours but by the next morning it had started to bubble lovely.
p.s
I'm using a brew belt a third of the way up my fermenter.
hope this reassures you. :)

Hopefully the fact the spray malt was introduced to 3 litres of fresh boiled water will have helped sanitise it a bit. I'll know not to get this next time.

I was worried though because the insruction did say that the yeast had to be added at the right temp and after topping up with cold water I did think that the finished product was too cold, but with the brew belt on it did warm up and it started off fine :D
