Royal Oak Pale Ale

Post by Mad Dog » Mon Feb 19, 2007 2:50 pm

Does anyone have a great recipe for Royal Oak Pale Ale, my favorite beer?

Bigster and monk had a dialogue going mid-year last year about it but I never heard whether they perfected the recipe. monk said his didn't come out well.

I can't get the beer here. No distributor. I'd like to make it, if I can find the right recipe. Please let me know if you have one.

Thanks.

Yes.

O'Hanlon's is brewing its version of it now. I haven't had any since EP stopped making it.

There is a version in European Beers also, very similar grain and hop bill. I think Wheeler works on a 75% efficiency

23 litres
OG 1048 FG 1011
4.9% ABV 30 EBU

Pale 4200g
Crystal 530g

Mash Temp 65C
Mash Time 90 mins
Mash Liquor 12 litres

Maltose Syrup 530g (replace with flaked maize)
Fuggles 42g 90mins
Goldings 35g 90mins
Goldings 10g 15mins
Irish Moss 1tsp 15mins

My current brew is a Royal Oak derivative closely based on Dave Line's recipe:-

7 lbs Maris Otter
1lb Crystal Malt
1lb Flaked Barley
14 oz cane sugar
6oz Demerara sugar
Danstar Nottingham Yeast

I polypinned it on 8/2 and it is rather good. I can't see it having much time to mature
:)
Incidentally are there others who use polypins?-most of the threads indicate that people use corny kegs or King Kegs.

I would use pins , or even firkins with a breather for some beers , if I could get them. I use cornys and it works well, I vent them when serving and they sit in a 12c fridge.

Would this be Ye Olde Royale Oake Ale, from 1275, before they started adding hops?

Edit Bum. Where's the delete post button......just seen the post immediately after the no hops one...

Bryggers - you see that little "edit" button on the right hand side of each post ? It's handy for correcting mistakes or adding information you missed out in the original post 8)

Thanks for the tip Andy, learn something new every day! Deadlydes, that set up you have there looks awesome, thanks for the pics. I am just wondering where I can set up a beer engine without incurring the wrath of SWMBO.

Thanks, guys. Sorry to be so long in getting back with you. This is all very helpful.

I'll let you know how mine turns out. Hopefully, it will be as good as I remember it.

Cheers.
