Campden Tablets - alternative?

Post by Yeasty Rob » Wed Sep 15, 2010 12:33 pm

Only just got into trying my hand at an Elderberry wine and so have never needed Campden tablets before (or felt I never needed them anyway).

Just got them ready for the end of fermentation and notice that the ingredients are pretty much sodium metabisulphite. Theres a dash of sodium disulphite and propylene glycol in there too but thats all.

I'm a bit disappointed as I've got a big bag of sodium metabisulphite that I use for sanitising now and again (and its cheaper), so could I just use that instead of a campden tablet in future - or do the other couple of ingredients actually do anything to balance out the effect.

Anyone have any idea's. Its not like they are much more expensive so no big deal, but just wondered if anyone just used the metabisulphite instead.

Chrisx1 has a thread or maybe even a video on you tube..........I just can't remember. He explains the rate of dilution to use sod. met. in place of campden tabs. Most people just use them for convenience.

Make a 10% w/v solution of Sodium Met.

5 ml (1 teaspoon approx) = 1 tablet equivalent

Cheers John and dcq1974 - I must admit the campden tabs are convenient, but good to know I can now use my supply of sodium met as an alternative :)
