Hello,
I'm about to follow an American IPA recipe I got from a book which has very reliable recipes (or so I'm told)
The problem is the extracts come in imperial mesurements and our extracts are of course metric 1.5kg tins.
The recipe converts to:
5lb Light Malt -> 2.268 KG
4lb Amber Malt -> 1.814 KG
This does not divde easily into 1.5 KG tins!
Should I go for 2x Light Malt and 1x Amber Malt = This still over by half a kilo. Would this make a difference? I suppose I could keep the 0.5 Kg of Malt but how long does it keep for? Should I just chuck it in there and have a stronger beer?

Re: American to UK extract conversion
You could scale the overall brew length up or down to suit.
In this case if you scaled up to 26 litres and used 3kg light and 1.5kg amber can you would keep a similar strength to the recipe.
Alternatively, scale down to 17 litres and use 1.5kg of each. This would perhaps give you a combo of light to amber that is closer to the recipe.
In both cases you would obviously need to scale the other ingredients to match.

Re: American to UK extract conversion
Thanks for the reply... I've also discovered that the UK Gallon is 1.2 times larger than an American one.
This means the actualy measurements for a uk 5 gallon brew is:
Light malt = 2.72 Kg
Amber = 2.178 Kg
So I've decided to just plough ahead with 3kg of light and 1.5 kg of Amber.
It'll be slightly weaker the estimated OG was 1.065 and mine was more like 1.055 but it means I don't have loads of half cans of malt hanging around.
I'll let you know how it turns out!
