I had a pint of this on Sunday, bit of a novelty, not sure I could drink more than a couple of pints.
A pub near my mate is hosting a "meet the brewer" on the 8th Oct, I'm told one of the brewdog brewers will be there, I see if I can get any more detail

I went to a brewdog meet the brewer two weeks ago, it was James Watt one of the founders. If it's anything like the one I went to it'll be a great talk with free samples of there main brews and some prototypes. We even got a shot of the 42% Sink the Bismarck (usually about eight quid). When and where is the event near you?

I know this has gone on a bit but I'm fortunate to know one of their brewers. I was blessed (yes blessed) to get a sample of 5am saint from a fermenter before any filtration.
WOW
Seriously. 5am Saint Bottle Conditioned would be what you'd give to a wine critic to try and describe. You'd see them take a sniff, a sip and then you'd recoil as their very jaw sloughed of their face as they tried to describe it.
Simply put, if mere men were to make 5am saint on a homebrew set up with all it's crude-ity, the world might very well end.

(I'll chat to my mate and see if he can give me some tips on a similar beer)

BrewDog are generally pretty open about what's in their beers. You could do worse than emailing James or Martin to ask for a recipe.

Why?
5am saint is a really lovely aromatic amber ale when served on tap but Brewdog have to filter their beers to a fixed amount so that there is no chance of it going bang during transport/storage (not everyone is fillwing to accept little deposits on the bottom of the bottles either).

5am saint from the secondry fermenter has so much more flavour and aroma that what you get from the bottles it is unreal. It is just incredible how much better it is and I think 5am saint is excellent from the bottle!

If you were to make the 5am Saint recipe in a homebrew setup where you didn't filter it or anything like that I am convinced you would end up with a beer that was so good it would make angels weep.

I'm pretty sure there are homebrewers who can produce beers that are far superior than 5am Saint.

No doubt. I'm just saying that if you took the exact 5am saint recipe and made it in a homebrew setup it would also be superior to 5am saint from the shop.

This was on cask at the Norwich Beer Festival.

Very underwhelming, they seem to subscribe to the American school of making every beer taste of nothing but hops and market it well rather than making any balanced beer. There was also a girl buying bottled punk IPA at the beer festival. I would have barred her.

Eh, different strokes for different folks. Brewdog have always gone for the American school of thought imo. Right about the bottles though. Funny thing is though, I was at the brewdog bar where they serve the brewdog beers on tap. They were selling LOADS of bottled beers dispite it being on tap (and it cost £3 for a bottle Vs. £3.50 a pint). Crazy.

I've not had enough of the American-style brews (beyond brewdogs) to form an accurate opinion of them. But they make a nice change from the British style ales you can get in the shops, and given teh cost of them it is nice to brew clones of them too! Not that homebrewing is purely about cost mind.

All i can say is thank goodness for the likes of brewdog making hoppy beers, there is a sea of 'balanced beer' out there i think the market can stand at least one hop dominated brewery for the hop heads amongst us.

Surely as someone who seems to prefer cask you must logically see that there is a difference between it and bottled (carbonation level for one), taste being a subjective thing you'll find that some people prefer differnent things, that you hold it against this woman that she didn't share your biais for cask, strikes me and as being more than a tad arrogant.

No so much for drinking a beer I don't like, but because you can get it bottled anywhere. Assuming she was not a member she paid £5 to get in, then almost certainly more than £1 for the bottle (which it is sold at now and again in Sainsburys). The cask version is not available everywhere.

I was making a throwaway comment really, if I actually ran the festival I would have fleeced her too. :P

there's possibly a reason for that; personally I think high hop beers really benefit from the sparkle of carbonation. I've tried the cask version of punk at the Peterboghorough Beer Fest and it was not at it's best in that form. Not that I would dare mention it within earshot of a CAMRA Partymember.

I had cask Punk IPA in perfect condition on Friday and it was much better than the kegged version.
