Frivolous Frog nano brewery is born! (at last)

Post by Kev888 » Wed Nov 03, 2010 10:53 pm

Well it took longer than I imagined, partly because of a relocation to the garage which needed doing up first, but its finally here aside from the odd hose or two and a bit of cable management - The Frivolous Frog brewery:
Image
Named in honour of some small froglets I found playing in the puddles made by emptying the boiler after its very first leak test. The HLT and boiler are about 25gallons and the MT is about 15gallons so by fly sparging I'm hoping to get up to four-cornie sized batches out of it. The shiny insulated bit on the ceiling over the HLT and MT is mainly because the roof is dirty asbestos and I didn't fancy vapour condensing on that and dripping back in. On reflection the frame may be a little excessive - its built from 3" fence posts and decking as I had some posts left from a garden project, but I guess it should last.

The most time consuming part was actually laying the new screed floor - the old cracked, root ridden one was a lot more uneven than I realised and so took nearly four tonnes of sand and cement to level (almost 9" thick in one corner!), and for some obscure reason I didn't buy it ready mixed.. However, whilst my back will take some time to recover, I now have a damp proof membrane and the floor drains both towards the front of the garage and away from the walls and central service pit - rather than into it. Next year when its dried enough I'll seal it with floor paint so it should then be easy to clean down. I'll probably do something similar to the walls too, which look a bit grim at the mo.

Anyway the major components were detailed in other threads: Boiler, MT and HLT (and the IC). The fermentation fridge is like many others on this site (and now needs extending as it'll only hold about 40L) - its on legs so that I can rack to cornies etc without having to move/disturb the FV. The box on the wall over the MT has a 16A immersion heater timer and an ATC 800+ (with an external relay to boost its power handling - see this thread for info) for controlling the HLT, and a thermometer (also from forttex) for measuring the Boiler and MT temperatures (I've not fitted my dial thermometer to the MT yet). It also has two 20A switches, so that I can bypass the timer and/or ATC if I want to. The sockets (and those on the wall) are quality MK ones, because the elements are 3kw and with this size of tank will be on for hours continuously.

As you can see the height of the ceiling is a little low - I'm concerned that the sparge will get very slow as the HLT level lowers so I may need to adjust the hole sizes in the sparge arm. It also gives precious little head for the totton pump which will pump from the boiler to the FV. So my solution is to put the pump in the service pit - normally it would be covered by boards with holes for the pipes to stop me falling in, but I always wanted a stealth pump anyway :-)

This only uses half the length of the garage so I'm envisioning stage two will be to construct a bigger FV cupboard and also a temperature controlled storage/conditioning cupboard in the remainder. However I can still get the car in (though now only with opening the doors at one side) so if I decide to go for larger/wider FVs in the future (I'm considering one of these conicals) I could end up having to put this in the pit, but I suspect that may be overkill. If such a thing exists in brewing.

Cheers

That looks really nice. The frame doesn't look excessive in the pictures - it's got to hold up 18 stone of water so it's best to be on the safe side! Is there still room for a car? :) What are you going to christen it with?

Thanks! Well I do like to build things solidly so all well and good I hope. Yes the car gets in still - though people can now only get out of it at one side..

I was going to prudently try it out with water tomorrow (I'm on leave) - work out the various losses in volume and temperature and so on. But then I thought hang on, all that effort and time, why not stick some grain in and do a brew?

It probably won't be great until I know how the new kit works so I'm just thinking of using stuff I've already got left over, rather than trying to aim for anything in particular - hopefully should be okay though (besides, something has to mop up all the flux residues and metal shavings :-) ). I posted a thread on it here if anyone has any suggestions, such as can be with a limited store cupboard - to be honest this could be a lot better planned so I'm not expecting it to be the best brew ever; after all this time it came as a bit of a surprise to finally get there!

Cheers,

Is your pump self-priming? If not it may benefit greatly from a relief valve assembly on the output.

Well, lets see if it works properly first - i hope so, its taken an age to get it this far!

No its not self priming but it'll be well below the level in the boiler before draining starts so it should prime okay naturally, and the output tube isn't fixed so i can lower that to help if necessary. If that gets to be annoying the relief valve would be an option though, so thanks for the suggestion.

All looks very nice. I am very jealous you have a pit in your garage btw.
I am glad you will finally be getting a brew on the go again.
Hope it all works well.

Yeah, never mind the brewery. We've seen loads of those. Kev's got an inspection pit!!! \:D/ \:D/ \:D/

You need to rename the brewery. The frog theme has been used many times on beer and breweries but I can't imagine any have ever been named for an inspection pit. How about "Inspection Brewery", or "Pit Pump Ales"?.... :D

Ha ha! yes the pit was secretly a selling point of the house - I had aspirations of building a kit car at the time, which needless to say never happened. To be honest its really just been a musty hole, occasionally used for changing exhaust pipes and brakes and so on (and making the gradient of screeding a right PITA!) but at least now its becoming used in brewing so it was worth it after all :-)

Hmm not sure if I should dissapoint the frogs and snatch their name away by this point - they were cheerful little chappies. Although I've discovered its not the easiest name to say even when sober..

Whatever its name though, the very first brew day for the new setup is now progressing, and the HLT is nearing strike temperature. how exiting is that? (So exciting in fact that I just mistook lb for kg on some new-to-me scales - fortunately realised that I seemed to have very little after weighing it all out!). I started a thread on the brew day here

You have the exact same garage we knocked down before our extension was built :)
Cracking job you've done there :)

Thanks everyone. It needs a few tweaks to make it nicer to use and its going to take a couple of brews before I've nailed the temperature characteristics, but it's first brew day went well considering- phew!

Think I'll give it a long rest before I make the next upgrade - time to concentrate on ingredients, brewing (and FV capacity) now :-)

I just caught this thread. I think that is an extremely well laid out/thought out and attractive brewery set up.

Thanks! Thats a really handy reminder; I'm finding there is a lot to sort out with cleaning and hoses and so on before it'll be convenient to use, and am tending to focus on those things at the mo. Standing back though its actually working out very nicely for the brewing process itself (after learning its temperature characteristics, anyway), so its good to be reminded that I at least got the main things right :-)
