Hi guys, have a couple of AG under my belt and wondered about trying a lager for my mates. I assume the process is much the some except the fermentation takes place around 15C. (I have only ever made ales). Would anyone like to suggest a recipe for me. Not looking to do anything too complex, but would like to try a pils. I have cornies, usually set at 7PSi for my Ale....I'm guessing it needs to be a little higher for lager.
Looking forward to hearing from you all
cheers

Re: Suggest a lager recipe
Depends how purist you want to go - you *could* do a pseudo-lager and do Nottingham or similar at 12-15c. Then just pale malt (ideally lager malt or low-colour marris otter) and 'lager' hops (tettnang, spalt or mittelfruh for german; saaz for czech style) - it's proper hard to tell the difference and a lot easier to make! Nottingham can be cleaner than some of the dry lager strains by many accounts...
Lager yeasts are usually more like 9-13c, require at least twice as much of a starter or dry yeast and twice as long to brew... Temp control is important - 15c is about right for a 'hybrid' style such as kolsch or california steam which are very hard to tell apart from trad lagers.
I just made:
23l
5kg lager malt
50g Tettnang (4.2% AA) 90 minutes OR 70g Saaz (3.3% AA)
50g Tettnang (4.2% AA) 15 minutes OR 70g Saaz (3.3% AA)
25g Tattneng (4.2% AA) 0 minutes OR 28g Saaz(3.3% AA) - optional
OG 1050
IBU 37ish
Yeast: 2l starter of liquid lager yeast (

Re: Suggest a lager recipe
I was just about to ask for a lager recipe to try first, and I saw this, thanks. Quick question, though - the 18g os Saaz at 0 mins, does that go in the boiler after the boil, or into the FV? If into the boiler, how long would you leave it to stand, etc.? Many thanks.
Re: Suggest a lager recipe
It generally means you chuck it in as you turn the boiler off and leave it to steep for 30 mins.
Re: Suggest a lager recipe
When I get home I'll post the recipe for my Act-A-Tw@t lager (its a slightly messed about with Stella clone in case you hadn't guessed by the name). Its due for brewing in the new year so cant tell you exactly how it'll tun out!.....

Re: Suggest a lager recipe
What kind of temperature control do you have bovrilheid ? Are you able to keep a fermenter at a consistent 10 - 12 C?
Re: Suggest a lager recipe
Thanks all,
Temp control will be in my Garage which is currently sitting at 10C, small oil filled radiator should mean that I can keep it around 10-15C.....if it gets much colder here in Shetland it can get down to 6C in the Garage.....but I should be OK for a 10-12C range.
