Felinfoel Double Dragon

Post by Jez » Sun Nov 21, 2010 6:10 pm

Hi,

I'm planning on using GW's recipe for a Felinfoel Double Dragon brew this week and was thinking about the hops and whether I can substitute any...

The recipe calls for Whitbread Golding Hops and I was wondering whether these are the same as "normal" goldings (as I've got some of those!)

I would also need some Bramling Cross hops (but under 10 g) but I don't want to buy 100g unless I have too (times are hard!). Is there a substitute I can use? Or do I bite the bullet and buy a pack?

Thanks in advance!

I've never noticed that much difference between WGV and Goldings myself so I imagine a substitution would be fine. You'd have a problem with Bramling X since they have a rather nice black currant type flavour which is going to be difficult to sub. I would suggest getting yourself 100gms of it and making a bramling X single hop beer with what you have remaining. It's rather good with just pale malt.

Brewed this beer a lot [mainly from the 2nd book]. Have subsituted the WGV with fuggles with good results. Don`t think I`ve ever changed the bramings or challenger. Never tried the real thing but really like this recipe.

Thanks for the advice!
I substituted the goldings and bought some bramlings.
Brewed yesterday and cant wait to try it as it is a lovely pint in the pub - and even out of the can.

I have never brewed this, but agree that WGV should taste fine, apparently it is a Goldings/Fuggles cross and I have used it often.
Very much +1 to TC2642, I did an excellent Bramling only. I have also done single Goldings and single WGV and although I thought noticeably different side by side, they are similar.
Whatever, it should be a very good beer; I can't understand why we used to call it FeelingFoul...

The wife likes it because she likes anything with Dragons, the house is covered with hundreds of them....And it should be VelinVoil.

Does anyone know if this the original recipe from the 1970s?

It used to be one of my favourite beers, back then.

I've been ordered to make a couple Felinfoel beers for a mate of mine, Double Dragon and another one whose name escapes me... I have the GW book so will be using that recipe for one, but will have to hunt for the second!
