Guiness, but a bit stronger

Post by fen_boy78 » Mon Dec 06, 2010 5:21 pm

Hello,

I brewed Guiness a couple of months back based on the Classic 70%, 20%, 10% recipe and it turned out very nice. However gave a bottle to a friend and he said he'd like it a bit stronger - about 5 -5.5% ABV. To keep him happy I said I'd give it a go and he#ll cover the cost of ingridents.

The only problem is how do I go about it.

Do i just increase the Pale Malt or will this dilute the flavour?

Do I increase everything or will the flavour be too strong?

Do I do a bit of both?

Will the hops need increasing.

I don't like the idea of experiments and I'd be gutted wasting a whole day brewing and it tastes like back wee so I wondered if anyone has tried this before.

Cheers

Mark

If you just want to make it stronger with the same flavour then add more pale. Perhaps 600g or so.

Or you could just add some sugar. I doubt you''ll tell the difference!

The recipe I've seen for Guinness Foreign Extra Stout (at 7.2% abv) uses the same amount of Roast Barley as normal Guinness (500g in a 25 litre batch), but with the Flaked Barley and Pale Malt increased

Thanks for your advice. I may go with your idea beerlover36 and keep the Roast the same and increase the others.

The more I look at it, the more its screaming parti-gyle. 4% for me and 5.5% for my mate... I've got until Monday to come up with a plan and I may change my mind several times before I weigh out the grist.

0.493kg Roast Barley

45g Target 90 min.
