The Gervin yeast is just Nottingham repackaged though (and in non-nitrogen flushed packaging) so there is still the chance of picking up some of the dodgy batch.
Having said that, I buy the Gervin stuff (for about £1) rather than pay more for branded Nottingham.

There was never anything actually wrong with the yeast, as such. It was Danstar's perforated packaging that caused a problem.Andy wrote:The Gervin yeast is just Nottingham repackaged though (and in non-nitrogen flushed packaging) so there is still the chance of picking up some of the dodgy batch.

Just cracked 2 kegs of what was going to be Christmas beer to be greeted by lots of haze and some sulphuryness with little noticeable hop aroma. Terrible beers, not make you ill but terrible
I checked back to my brew log and have seen something in common between the AIPA and the Bitter. Not the malt bill, not the hops, but yes - the yeast.
I tipped my 3 remaining suspect batch no. packs onto a white saucer and opened 1 pack of the repackaged Nottingham (Gervin) on the saucer next to it and here they are:

Close up of the Notts:

...and now of the Gervin:

Side by side:

Packet information:

Very pee'd off, 80 pints ruined.

Re: Nottingham ale yeast boo boo
my last few packs of Nottingham have been like this Si. The majority of it was normal colour but it had darker bits here and there, just like your picture.
They weren't the ones with the perforated date stamp either. They were a newer batch.
My beer fermented fine, but some of them had a long lag time and it remains well hazy even after.
So firstly there was something wrong with the packets then the yeast.
Not good.

i can believe that there is still so much problem with nottingham yeast up till now... This used to be a great yeast before they encountered some problems, now i just using liquid yeast and make a starter just to play it safe
Re: Nottingham ale yeast boo boo
ive not had a problem the comercial packs.the yeast ive got is cultured in denmark , not austria.
when i was rehydrating id say its was more like the muntons gervin in colour
i have had a problem with the smaller packs however, one of the test brews died a particularily nasty death........
maybe the issue is with the austrian lab? i think that yeast was one i picked up at a local hbs, ive just got a load of little packs in theyre all danish so ill tell you how they go

Re: Nottingham ale yeast boo boo
OK, so I've just found this thread and decided to have a look at my Nottingham, it's the Austrian 099V batch. I've got no experience of using yeasts apart from the kit yeasts I've used so far so should I just ditch it and buy something else before I ruin my first AG brew that I've got planned for next week? It seems a shame to ruin a brew for the sake of a quid or so's worth of yeast.
I did a Coopers APA on Saturday and I noticed that it had light and dark grains in it just like SyHoltye's pictures of the Nottingham - I've never noticed this colour difference before but it seems to be fermenting as well as the other Coopers I've done, just a coincidence? Obviously it's too early to know if this one's OK, it's just that it's the first time I've noticed the colour difference

Sorry to hear that Si, all that effort (and beer) wasted just because of a poxy packet of yeast!
Worth contacting Danstar and seeing what they have to say (including pics) ?
