S Type Spear Removal

Post by Hardy Home Brew » Sun Dec 05, 2010 1:41 pm

All

Does anyone know how to remove the S Type spear from a Trenstar (ex Fosters) 50L Barrel??

I have de pressurised the barrel and unscrewed the spear however there must be a safety lock? stopping the spear from comming out.

Cheers

There's a small safety catch mounted on the inside of the assembley itself. You need to compress the centre section of the valve body down, by pushing it down with a big screw driver, if you do this, then you should be able to access the small catch. To release it, simply insert a small flat blade screw driver into it and whilst it's still in there, give it a couple of turns.

I've managed to do this single handed but if you have got a spare pair of hands, it wold make things easier i.e get someone to press the centre section in and hold it there, whilst you locate the safetly clip, it's a kind of triangle, which is spring loaded. Insert your small blade screw driver and give it a turn ..... job done.

Hi Waffty

Many thanks for the info.. i've tried depressing both the centre and outer ring on the spear but cannot see a screw.

I've attached a couple of photos of the spear - is this the same as yours??

Any help greatly appreciated.[Image029.jpg][Image029.jpg]

It's a clip you're looking for, basically, it's a small triangle, that's spring loaded, it mounts on the inside of the 'spear' and is accessable by pushing the two seals down. You can see it here, right at the top of the spear itself.

And here with the screw driver forcing it down.

Waffty..

Result... many thanks for your help.

The spear was slightly different in that it had 1 small plate which acted in the same way your 2 triangles did, stopping the spear from coming past the neck.

Removed the plate, now the spear can be removed any time.

I'd attached a photo but it doesn't seem to work.

Anyway

Thanks Again

Have a very Merry Christmas..
