Hello all I am planning a go at a FWH addition. Hear goes
Scottish Heavy /110Litre /1040 OG 80% Efficiency Tinseth / Promash
Pale Malt 16.937 97%
Crystal .255 1.5%
Chocolate .090 0.5%
Roast B .180 1%
Hops 30.1 EBU
Challenger 6.1 alpha 120g FWH
Challenger - - - - 107g 60 min
Styrian G 3.2 alpha 100g 0 min
Does this look allright been reading up on FWH on the net but not to sure about how much bitterness from the FWH addition. There are so many posts on the net but they all contradict each other on how much bitterness you get from FWH i went for Tinseths calculations with promash. Does the hop additions look okay with you guys that FWH. Cheers
First Wort Hopping
I too have been wondering about this. By my thinking the bitterness is being extracted most when the wort is boiling, so if I'm FW-Hopping I allow for 60minutes in the calc's because although the hops are in for a total of 90minutes it takes about 20-30minutes for my boiler to get boiling. I'd love to know the actual answer though

The utilisation for FWH is a contentious area with some people claiming you only get as much bitterness as you would for a twenty minute boil. Personally I don't see it myself and most of the software packages available presume the utilisation is of a similar order to that achieved by a full length boil.
Have a go and see what you get is probably the best option here.

I have always first wort hopped, I didn't know that, that was what I was doing

We've discussed this before: viewtopic.php?t=303&highlight=first+wort+hopping
