First Gold/ Amarillo IPA Help Please

Post by Chicken Dipper » Thu Jan 20, 2011 8:50 pm

I want to make a bottle conditioned IPA. How does this look?

23l

5kg Maris Otter
500g Torrified Wheat

50g First Gold 90 mins
20g First Gold 30 mins

10g Amarillo 20 mins
10g Amarillo 10 mins
10g Amarillo 0 mins

US-05

I know that both wheat malt and torrified wheat will assist in head retention, but is there much taste difference?

I read that Amarillo is best used in moderation, but is this too cautious? :)

Taste is a funny thing but I personally notice no taste difference when adding torrified. Havn't used wheat malt.

Yep. That amount of hops you are looking more at deuchars interpretation of IPA. I would double all additions. Then bottle condition for longer, say 4 months. If you like a hoppy IPA. If you are looking more for a session beer, leave it as it is.

I used 100g Amarillo in a pale ale with just MO + 250g Torrified Wheat. (23l) It was a superb pint (at about 6% abv) but the Amarillo was quite subtle. I plan on doing the same but with at least 150g this time.

My First Gold/Amarillo ale is, i think, the best pale ale i have made.

I put all the hops in at the end - 20 to 0 minutes. 50g of FG and 50g of amarillo in total.

It had loads of hop flavour but was not overly bitter like many IPAs.

They're a great combo.

pdtnc, that's a monster!

Dave-o that's a really interesting idea, I think I might give that a go in the near future.

Johnnyhop, fair play mate, will grow a set of swingers!

techtone, thanks v much.

Right, thanks to all for your stirling advice as always.

I think I will up the MO and make to 6%, leave out the wheat out this batch and experiment with it next time. Will deffo up the hops also, will keep some bittering but add most for flavour and leave to mellow longer than usual.

Can taste it already! Bootiful!!
