Post by masterosouffle » Sat Feb 05, 2011 2:00 am

SInce tasting the Black IPA from The Kernal, I have been desperate to make one, have come up with this recipe to try and use some bits up
Do the fermentables look okay? have stuck the kilo of sugar in to try and make it a bit lighter on the palate
Will the Centennial and Mount Hood be okay together? these are the 2 US hops i had in the freezer. Has anyone used these together?

Cant really be of anyhelp as it's not even a style I've tried.
I am however fasinated by it and will be brewing a version soon.
I presume you are only adding the carafa in that manner purley for colour?
I been reading anything I can find on these beers and it seems anything goes really as they are so new there are not any rules( not that that matters anyway:) )
Keep the post updated with your progress

Will do!
I've been reading alot about them, particulary on the northern brewer forum, there is also a feature on them in one of the BrewingTV episodes (Cascadian Dark)

I'm hoping this will be quite malty from the Vienna, very dark from the Carafa II, and of course hoppy!
I am tempted to add a bit of crystal or chocolate, but probably only a couple of hundred grams for a bit mire malty goodness...

I have a brewday this evening and was not really sure what I was going to brew.
It's now down to a choice of 2, a version of this is one of them.
Are you going to mash low for a more fermentable wort?
Yeah I think malty would be good here

Looking to mash at 64'. Have chucked the sugar in to get the gravity up without the beer becoming too heavy...
