Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
There's no reason this wouldn't work with BIAB.
Assuming you are doing a mash/sparge BIAB, these amounts should be about right:
20l mash
13l sparge
Works for me anyway.

i have just made this 9 days ago and its looking and tasting very good. i would like to experiment further with this recipe...
Dave o what experimenting did you do to come up with this one or was it an educated guess that just worked well?

Well i have used all flaked wheat (i.e. just flaked W and lager malt), instead of subbing some of the flaked for wheat malt. Although i didn't have a stuck mash, it was a bit stiff and i felt like i was treading a fine line. Subbing a kilo of the flaked for malt made little difference to the brew (apart from a slightly higher OG) and made the mash a bit looser.
I have used various hops - Haller H, Tettnang, Saaz and they are all good but Saaz perhaps just takes it.
Without the Bobek at the end it is still good, and probably more true to style, but i like the lemony notes the Bobek provides, and it gives some character to what can be a somewhat plain tasting beer (it has no malt character, for example).
I'll admit i've never used Curacao peel - i'm a skinflint and just can't bear to shell out that much money on something like that. I've used plain oranges, tangerines and satsumas. Plain oranges probably just take it.
Re the yeast, i know i should try a liquid yeast one day, but as above i am a skinflint and won't pay £5-6 for a yeast. Yes, as everyone tells me, i could split the pack and cultivate it, but man that's a hassle and means that brewing has to take over your everyday life more. I have enough on my plate without worrying about being nursemaid to yeast!

Thanks from me for the recipe - going to give this a go in the next few days
what mash efficiency is your recipe based on or should we assume 75%?
Thanks

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
It is based on 75% but to be fair it is probably a little less due to the flaked wheat. Beersmith seems to assume too high an efficiency for it.

I'll assume 75% then. Thanks.
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
i made this biab stylee. the oats suck like a sponge , made it harder than normal to get the expected quantity of wort.
i tasted lovely out of the fermentor though, bottled last week should be ready to try tonight. looking forward to it.

Just a quick note on the flaked wheat.
Our local health food shop (Sunshine Health Food, Stroud) stocks 500g bags of flaked wheat for the princely sum of 55p each, so £1.10 per kg. That might even be cheaper than Rob! The same shelves hold all sorts of tempting experimental stuff like rye, barley, oats and other grains that I have never heard of. I'm not a great experimenter myself but for someone who is then there is a whole world of fun to be had there.
I can't imagine Sunshine is unique in this regard so it's definitely worth seeking out your local (probably independent) health food shop. Oh, and if you are into cooking they also keep a huge range of herbs and spices priced at about 70p, usually for bigger quantities than the supermarket equivalents.

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
your local shop stocking this wheat is a good find.
however where I live (Chertsey) I'm having a real nightmare finding stockists of flaked wheat. No shops near me (Holland & Barret and Julian Graves don't stock). The online company I found that supplies wheat flakes in 500g bags want £6.50 just to deliver!

Sunshine do sell online but their site only seems to list a subset of their shop stock. It looks to mostly concentrate on vitamin supplements and stuff.
Might be worth asking them if they will supply other stuff by post. Contact details here:

Oh, and the product is called "wheatflakes" rather than "flaked wheat". I checked the ingredients list and it simply says "wheatflakes" too!

I like the look of this recipe - thats a lot of porridge oats though. Will give it a try for my next AG.
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Hi there
I am planning to brew witbier regularly. As a result when I was struggling to get wheat flakes I went for 25kg of wheat from Doves Farm and bought a cereal flaker in from the US for around £80 inc P&P. Now I can flake my own wheat fresh. This flaker only does a cup at a time but you soon get up to the 4lb you need. I'll let you know how wit goes
