By splitting the 2 cans, what you are doing is making a 2.5 gallon brew and adding extrta malt.
You would need to offset the malt with some bittering, so your taking the Wherry away from what it is.
Great if you have brewed a wherry and want to adapt it differently. If you have never brewed it before (like me) its best to do as per instructions, taste, then consider if you can use it to make something your aiming for.
What you propose, really you should be looking at the 'Extract brew forum' and then you should think about ditching the LME and going straight in with a DME and boiling it with hops to get your desired brew.

I'm still eyeing up a big stockpot in the works canteen. If I get it i'll be boiling away straight from the dme / grain.

Thanks Geezah,

What cheapish one can kit do you think might go well with the amber LME?

Does anybody know if it would be possible (and I'm asking a lot here) to adapt a kit enough to get a result not dissimilar to Dark Star Hophead...? [-o<

I have some (just) out of date Brupaks Amber LME 1.5kg, pick up half price from the HBS. I thought that added to one can of the Wherry kit it might make an acceptable brew.

Probably more malty and dark than a conventional Wherry so perhaps with some extra hops to even it out.

Hows that sound?
I have been looking at the half price offer on the LME in Easyhomebrew for a quick malt extract brew if I havent got time for an AG brew, was in there yesterday and it looks like there is only a few left,my concern was as they are out of date they may suffer from the dreaded malt tang.

Having this week discovered the wonders of thrifty shopper [very good, btw], I'm now the pround owner of umpteen 50 gram packets of EK Goldings, Fuggles, Cascade and Challenger hops. And already the owner of two slightly out of date cans of 1.5 kg brupaks amber liquid malt extract.

Buggar the Wherry, what about the two cans plus a boil with hops (which ones)? I've got Nottingham and S0-4 yeast.

Surely I should be able to make something tasty out of the above. Any ideas (or recipes)?

There's a recipe posted on the extract forum which will match exactly what you are looking for

viewtopic.php?f=3&t=36035

You just need to remember to use more liquid (about 17% more). See here for more information.

Personally, I'd just use your two tins and the specified amount of hops

Thanks Jason, Sounds like I'm thinking along the right kind of lines.......and looking in the wrong forum!

The brew's currently looking like this:

Double Amber Best Bitter

2x 1.5 kg Brupak Amber LME
300 gr brewing sugar (dextrose, presumably)
2 teaspoons of burton water crystals (I presume you add them at this stage?)

Water added to make 5 litres in total (maybe a bit more to allow for evaporation - see, I'm learning!)

Then boiled

Once boiling add

50gr East Ken Goldingsfor 6o min (26.30 IBU)
10gr Fuggles boiled for 20 min (3.19 IBU)
10gr Fuggles boiled for 10 min (1.90 IBU)
10gr Fuggles steeped for 20 min (can't work out the IBU for this)

strain, put in FV and top up to 23 litres with cold water

Wait for a suitable temp drop then pitch dried S-04 yeast.

I have use the fabulous Kit and Extract Beer designer to get me this far. See the following link for more details:

Really looking forward to this, my first extract brew. Got a spare few hours next saturday, SWMBO and spog are out for the day, so hoping to get the Coopers APA bottled and this one on the go.

Sounds like decent recipe except I would not boil LME in such small quantities of water, just hops.

Here is recipe that comes out really close to Dutch Dubbel type:

1x Coopers Dark Ale
1.5kg liquid malt extract
500g Light DME
kit yeast, fermented at 22C for 3 weeks in primary, bottled afterwards.

mixed to 23l, ended up OG 1.053, FG 1.009 (I think mixing to 21l would be better, but this way turned out really good too - after priming I have about 6.3%ABV)

After 4 months in bottles, it tastes fantastic, I think, substituting liquid light malt to amber and adding additional 500g of brewing sugar, mixing to 21l would make this brew even better! Just keep in mind that blow-off tube and bucket lid clamps is a must for this brew as it is really foaming first couple days.

Just a quick question for you all, I should be putting on an EDME superbrew gold lager tonight, I'm torn between the bblyb San Miguel Recipe and just trying it as it is with a half a sachet of the Caxton Hop sachet thrown in first.

Has anyone tried this? Do the hops bring out any improvement, or would they clash with the already present flavours?
Thanks.

Personally if it was me, I'd either do the Dave Line San Miguel recipe or just do the kit as per instructions as both are tried and tested, using the hop sachet which I'm guessing is from another kit? is more of an unknown entity and you are more likely to be disappointed if it doesn't turn out quite like how you expect.

I've been tempted by the San Miguel recipe myself before. I'm not a huge lager fan but do enjoy the odd bottle of San Miguel now and again when drinking at friend's houses.

Just done a Coopers kit with a few hops and its tastes fantastic :D

1 can of Coopers Pale Ale
1 bag of Muntons brew enancher (1kg)
25g of Goldings hops
1tsp of Gypsum
1 packet of Beer Bright

Real simple to make;

8 ltr stockpot filled and brought to the boil, knock heat down and mix in the enancher powder. Dump the hops in and bring back up to a roll boil (steady stir) for 10 mins. Strain the hops out then add to the FV then dump in the Gypsum and can Coopers and give a mix. Fill up to your desired water amount with cold water and give a good mix, I did 20 ltrs but its up to you 20/23/25 etc which brings it nicely down to pitching temp (check its under 30c). Pitch yeast and ferment @22c ish for 7 days, job done and no kettle boils :)

Going to do this one again but next time change the 1kg of Muntons enhancer for a 1.5kg can of Coopers light malt, sure it will cost about £6 more to make but I think it might be worth it
