had a minor panic this morning when i went into the shed and see this:

looks like i was quite close to having all my wort all over the floor! next time i will transfer the boiled wort to my no chill vessel, i didnt bother yesterday because i thought the volume was too small.

That looks like you snapped the lid on nice and air tight and as it cooled it caused a bit of a vacum distorting your boiler mate. Well done on your 1st brew day - guaranteed it'll be a very good pint!!

yeh i did just that, i might have known that'd happen though as its why i brought a no chili jerry can thing. i transfered the wort into my FV this morning whiched raised 2 more concerns, the wort was quite cold and there was a fair bit of hot break(?) material in there. i didnt use any irish moss or whirlfloc would using either sort the wort and make it clearer?

i chucked it in the FV regardless with some notting ale yeast. i thought the cold wort might have shocked the yeast but i think because the yeast was as cold as the wort it seems fine, already creating CO2 anyway!

would finings take the floating material out the beer after fermenting? i was just thinking of carefully syphoning it and hoping it would all sink to the bottom.

just realised something quite funny, when I chilled it over night I left it in the boiler... with ALL the HOPS! Haha! Should be interesting when I come to trying it! I'm thinking it might be SUPER bitter!

You could do with improving your insulation - I don't think two towels will do it. Try to use an old quilt - wrapped round more and then put the towels on.

Congrats on your first - its great fun.

i bottled my beer at the weekend (saturday) and its been in the back room 2nd conditioning. However i couldnt resist opening a bottle this evening! Only 4 days after bottling and i'm really over the moon with the flavour of the beer!!! :) i wasnt sure if i had mucked it all up by leaving the wort in with the hope over night but it's all good!

i dont think you would want a pale ale any more bitter but its very drinkable!

Good work! Glad it all turned out well!

I'm hoping to go for AG#1 this weekend. Choice of either Taylors Landord or Deuchars, hmm.

Started a thread on my AG#1 brewday. A few technical difficulties but overall I think it went ok, we'll see when the tasting begins though.
