Was pissed after the brewery decided to drop this beer, so I emailed them a recipe and ask for some guide. This is what I derived after some tips from the brewer.

Black malt 550g
Flakes oats 350g
Crystal 40 200g
Crystal 80 200g

Blackwych clone
Re: Blackwych clone
That does seem like a rather huge amount of black malt...
Would be supprised if you needed a tenth of what you have there

Re: Blackwych clone
That was precisely what I said, but they replied that it was based on an old recipe which was good, and even though others would add roasted barley or chocolate, they didn't wanna change anything, if it ain't broken then don't fix it. I was surprised that there isn't any roasted barley in it since there is a nice coffee note in the beer. N 10% sure seems alot!!! But black malt does have more subtle taste
Re: Blackwych clone
23L, the beer is 5%abv if im not mistaken. I may go with a higher mash though to add some body to the beer as the original does feel a little thin.

Re: Blackwych clone
This would be my next brew, hopefully this week. I should be able to taste the effects of the black malts after chilling the wort to have an idea if its ok or its too burnt. Will update then
Re: Blackwych clone
Did this brew yesterday and i tweaked it a little to my preference. I tasted the wort before pitching. Surprisingly the black malt was more subtle than most of us would have expected. It more of a mellow coffee taste, and definitely not over burnt even tho i used 10%. I also opted out the styrian golding, as i think fuggles will compliment the beer better with its earthy tones. Also, blend the MO with some pale as I didnt want the beer to be too biscuity. Hoping this will turn out nicely.

Re: Blackwych clone
2 weeks into conditioning and just had half a pint of it. 10% black doesn't make it burnt or bad, but I think I will maybe blend it with roasted barley next time. Reason being I prefer a coffee taste somewhere in there, but all black malt only gave it a very deep dark chocolate taste n lesser coffee notes. That was surprising as I was expecting it to be more coffee like. It still turned out well and hopefully will be even better in 2-3 weeks. It should is a robust stout lol
Obsidian stout is made with 8% black and 2% roasted barley, so i may try that combination next.
