Substitute hop suggestions
Substitute hop suggestions
My last brew was this, adapted from the Westphalian Alt in the Altbier book by Horst Dornbusch.
Batch Size: 19.00 L
2.30 kg Pale Malt, Maris Otter ( 50.55 %
1.80 kg Wheat Malt, 39.56 %
0.45 kg Munich Malt 9.89 %
16.00 gm Pearle (60 min)
7.00 gm Pearle (30 min)
12.00 gm Pearle (10 min)
1.00 items Whirlfloc Tablet (Boil 15.0 min) Misc
1 Pkgs SafAle English Ale (DCL Yeast #S-04) Yeast-Ale
I plan on brewing it again as it already tastes great but with a substitute hop. Any suggestions? It doesn't have to be one of the usual varieties used as Perle substitutes, just something different, I'm not bothered about sticking to the style either. I did think I might try Cascade.
Roger.

Re: Substitute hop suggestions
If you would like it to be still european like, then you could go with a Hallertau or Styrian Goldings. Cascade would be a good shout as well.

Re: Substitute hop suggestions
Why don't you keep the Pearle for your 1st additions and add some Strisselspalt for the flavouring/aroma?
I like the profile of Strisselspalt myself.
Cheers

Thanks for the replies fella's.
I was aiming for a single hop brew as I only get time to brew every other month because of work and I don't want to end up with a heap of packets of hops that might go to waste.
Roger.

Re: Substitute hop suggestions
I don't care what it's called or style labels, I just want a nice pint.

Re: Substitute hop suggestions
Ok, I was meaning if you happened to end up with a lot of different hops you could whack them all into a nice big hoppy pale ale aka an IPA.

Re: Substitute hop suggestions
Sorry I didn't mean that to read as it probably did so yes thanks for the suggestion, sounds good to me

Re: Substitute hop suggestions
I think tettnanger goes well in Altbier. Nice spicy German noble hop!

Very mild, noble hop from Alsace, aromas of lemon and grass, some say that they have black currant too but I don't detect that.196osh wrote:

I was interested to see that Samuel Adams is using them in their new Kolsch, I need to add that to my beer shopping list.
