Water treatment help please

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Water treatment help please

Post by scuppeteer » Tue Apr 26, 2011 9:04 pm

Hi All,

I have finally got round to getting some Burton Crystals but haven't a clue how much to add.
Local water board says my water is slightly hard measured at 104mg/l CaCO3... what ever that means!
Can you advise how many grams crystals per litre or brew (23l) I should add so I get a nice clear Pale ale for a change.

Advice greatly received.

Cheers
Dave Berry

Can't be arsed to keep changing this bit, so, drinking some beer and wanting to brew many more!

Sir, you are drunk! Yes madam, and you are ugly, but in the morning I shall be sober! - WSC

I will try to help,
With your water at 104 mg litre you will need 0.41ml per litre of CRS to bring your alkilinity down to 30 for pale beers. So for 25 litres 10ml of CRS added to water, plus a camden tablet to get rid of chlorine then 1tsp of gypsum in the dry goods and 1 tsp of gypsum in the boil. This is for mashing if you are using kits ignore me. Lots of lads on this site are brilliant, Better than me. The best of luck.
