my concerns were unfounded re the T58 yeast it appears.
I've just transferred to secondary, not something I normally do, but I intend to bottle this one - its very cloudy because I forgot the copper finings. But anyhow I moved it to a new container, threw in a generous handful of styrians and some finings - left it warm overnight and now have turned all heating off and will leave it there till it clears. I took a sample and that has cleared considerably over a couple of days and the gravity is down to about 1011, so it has definitely fermented out in spite of what appeared to be a fairly quiet ferment.
I also used the extra pale maris in this and it is almost like lager malt in colour - i think it was about 3.2 units, not sure how that exactly compares with lager malt. Will post pics when I bottle it.
Anyhow, all is progressing well.

For my area they quote 275ppm CaCO3 for total hardness and 180ppm as CaCO3 for alkalinity - quite a difference. As I prepare all the liquor I need for the whole brew in one go, ie, mash, sparge, and any top up, I just CRS it in one hit. In my case 41ml for 53L (leaves a bit of liquor over - you never know!) to finish up with a brew length of 24-25L. It's calculated to end up with about 40ppm of temporary hardness - for bitters and pale ales.
I got the same 100L pot as you, as yet unconverted. Good to see it in action
What is the rating of the burner, and how vigorous a boil did you get? Mind you, you need to do a 50L batch to really put it through it's paces.

Low colour Maris Otter is the pukka stuff for IPA's. Good choice. Equivalent to the old 'White' or 'East India Pale' malt that they used originally for IPAcrow_flies wrote: I also used the extra pale maris in this and it is almost like lager malt in colour - i think it was about 3.2 units, not sure how that exactly compares with lager malt. Another way is to do what Seveneer does.. it's 100L - it's a cylinder, more or less. measure the height; 50cm I think. so that's 0.5 cm per litre. Use a tape measurebandit1200s wrote:where do I find details of the sight tube for measuring volume as I have just finished setting up the self same stock pot and burner.

To be honest it was hard to see the boil as it was so low down and there was so much steam, but it certainly brought it to boil very quickly, considering it was cold and outside and unlagged. Its rated at 6.3kw, I imagine if I were to use propane instead of butane it would be hotter??? but I think you are right that until I do a 50l boil I wont know for sure about the ferocity of the boil - I have high hopes though!!

Hi EB,
My lovely shinyness is covered under a layer of dust at the mo in the garage.
I haven't even tried my new plate chiller yet
I got 5 brews done with the HERMS. the 1st was fine, the next 2 had stuck mashes. I took a saw and drill to the manifold and the next 2 were also fine.
The new HE is great
Then on the 22/01/07 I started my own business and I just haven't made time to brew since
When I get a clear run for 2 brews you'll have to come over for the second
to see how well your PID controller works

I know just how that feels and it doesn't seem to get much better in the second year either but hopefully this year will be better for meVossy1 wrote:Then on the 22/01/07 I started my own business and I just haven't made time to brew since![]()
