brew in a bag - looking to order bag from UK

Post by grubac » Sat May 14, 2011 2:03 pm

Hello Everyone!

I've decided that I'm going to try a BIAB mash. Therefore, I'm looking for an appropriate grain bag. My batches are 10 gallons, so I'll need a bag for about 8 to 10 kg of grain.

Does anyone know where in the UK I can order such a bag?

If you have trouble finding a supplier, it is not too difficult to make your own bag, really. You just need basic sewing skills and some voile (nylon net curtain material)

That's quite a weight to lift when draining.

I was wondering what size hay nets go up to, as a way of providing support for the voile.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

If you don't fancy making a bag there is a member here on Jim's, EoinMag, whose wife makes them to order. Might be worth getting in touch. Here is her blog!

The problem with cotton is that it soaks up a lot of your wort. It also takes a long time to dry, meaning that you risk mould (unless you throw it in the washing machine straight after brewing, I guess). You really want a man-made fibre.

I believe that the voile for BIAB is actually Polyester :-k It can be found where ever curtain material is sold :)

Excellent! Thanks for all the answers everyone.

OZ11 - I've already contacted Eoinmag, thanks for telling me about his wife's work.

I love this forum,

am about to move into BIAB as an introduction for AG and was well dischuffed with the price of bags. This little hint will save me a few £'s. :flip:

Thanks

The wife was talking about haynets too, but I have had a grain bill of 14Kg dry, so whatever that was wet, in my bag and there was no issue with that. I think you'd have to be doing massive batches to warrant a hay net, bigger than you really want to be doing with BIAB, my boiler is 75l full, so I tend to start 65l boils.
