How long does pre-boiled wort keep for..?

Post by FutureBrewer » Mon May 30, 2011 12:19 pm

Hi all,

Boiler problems ( again!) has meant that I've had to abandon my 2nd all-grain brewday... I've collected 2 batches from the mashtun and put them into a couple of fermenting buckets while I consider my next move.

How long will this keep for - or is it best to throw it away :?

I'm thinking about kicking the boiler up and down the street, before taking a sledgehammer to it

Cheers,

Not long at all.
If you can't get your boiler working quickly, you might like to consider boiling it on the stove - in small batches if you must - at least 15mins should kill most stuff that will grow in it.

Thanks Wolfy,

It's a dead loss then... It'll have to go down the drain.

Blimey - that was pretty depressing stuff, watching 27 litres of wort go down the toilet...

:(

lots of people wait overnight between the sparge and boil. There's a danger of lactobactillus build up which would sour the beer the longer you leave it - the boil would kill off the bacteria, but leave the sourness.
I would've covered it up and see what it tasted like before you can get it boiled.

Thanks LansonBrewer,

It had to go down the drain - I can't tinker with brewing again until next weekend. I think it would've gone VERY sour by then.

Yeah, you'd have needed to be a student to drink that. :D
Good luck fixing your boiler - do you know what is wrong with it?

 Ha ha! Quite...

The boiler - I don't know... No problems with a rolling boil on my first extract brew, but had a few issues on my first AG brew. Found a slight leak around the element which I fixed, then an internal fuse popped... which I also fixed. Had a full rolling boil last night when testing it for today's brew.

Today though, it starts heating, gets so far, then the indicator light turns orange and the power cuts out. Rolling the thermostat back to zero and starting again brings it back to life for a few mins, then it's off again.

Maybe the thermostat needs bypassing - maybe I need to sell it so someone else can play with it instead...

Bit of a wasted day really... :|
