Single hop AG recipe??

Post by Rowang » Fri Jul 01, 2011 7:13 pm

Hi guys,

Im fancying trying my hand at a single hop pale ale recipe.. does anyone have one they have done that they particularly like? Im thinking hoppy and citrussy as hell (currently knocking back Scarer's Bombay IPA...very quickly..) - and pretty pale - at about 4%. Citra or amarillo or something.. i would just have a go - but thought id see if anyone had any advice first!

Cheers!

Amarillo, Motueka, Rakau or Pacifica are all fantastic as single hop brews (100% MO or 90% MO +10% wheat or munich or vienna or caramalt or carapils etc).

Hi

Hophead recipe here is all Cascade.
Lovely pint. =D>

I'd also suggest it would be good as 100% Amarillo as Darkstar do a Hophead Amarillo.

Citra's an excellent choice too, planning it for my next brew.
Fermenting -!
Maturing - Lenin's Revenge RIS
Drinking - !
Next brew - PA
Brew after next brew - IPA

Cheers for the answers!!

What sort of quantity of these buggers should i be adding to a 5kg MO brew? I figured to throw in 100g-ish of one spread throughout the brew, with heavy post boil hopping... unless there is some kind of science to it ;)!!

Yep, chuck in 100g.

I favour dividing it into 3 roughly equal bunches and chucking them in at 15m, 5m and flameout. But then i'm after flavour not bitterness. You'll still get some bitterness anyway.

Another vote for Citra, 100g minimum but the more you can spare for late additions the better

Mount Hood is great, I went through about 1kg of that stuff doing brew after brew with it!

Riwaka is another excellent choice for a single hopped brew. I brewed the following recipe last autumn and it was really great. One of my favourite ever brews, despite the simplicity.

Pale Malt - Maris Otter 3030 grams 94.6%
Vienna Malt 170 grams 5.4%

Riwaka 6.1 % 60 mins 43 grams
Riwaka 6.1 % 15 mins 5 grams
Riwaka 6.1 % 5 mins 5 grams
Riwaka 6.1 % 80c add. 35 grams

Final Volume: 18 Litres
Original Gravity: 1.040
Final Gravity: 1.009
Alcohol Content: 4% ABV
Total Liquor: 26 Litres
Mash Liquor: 8 Litres
Mash Efficiency: 75%
Bitterness: 40 EBU
Colour: 7 EBC
