thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge ....
Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
To do what I have been doing, copper wort chiller, I just used the tubing they sell on the website but to do what I am doing now I need to upgrade the fittings and hosing
Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge

Not sure about running hot/cooled wort through the pipe but I use that tubing to run the iced water through my wort chiller in the summer

Unless it says otherwise silicone tube is ususlly not food grade as its cured with unpleasant chemicals which could potentially leech out - and in this case potentially ditto for whatever colours it. That said, people do seem to use such stuff and in general I've not heard of problems so its personal choice as always. If it does concern you the platinum cured stuff like this is supposed to be better for food use.

So, I'm thinking of doing a little control box which will house the PID, SSR etc, but am thinking having it control the pump too; with a on/off switch and then a dial to control the flow speed. Only problem is.... I have absolutely no idea where to start with the 'lectrics.
Any ideas?
Any ideas?

Personally, i may be repeating sorry, i have done the control in 2 ways, the latter i use now :-
1) buy a variable voltage adaptor - 4.5v, 6v, 7.5v, 9v, 10 odd, 12 etc, and just switch it down to what you need, on or off is plug it in or unplug it
due to the adaptor not being able to be modded to accept the pumps cable (a fixed end and weird cabling) point 2 was then actioned
2) bought a 12v straight adaptor, and used a voltage drop cable which i cut the end plugs off, these are used for pc fans silencing, run that inline and linked it up, runs about 10v now which is good for me, again, on or off is just plug it in or unplug.

As for tubing - I sourced barbs off of ebay, the inlet is a 12mm ID for normal sized tube, and I left the screwdown on the outlet which fits siphon sized tube, I use just standard clear tubing.
The only problem you will have is the tube will collapse on the inlet side if using on a mashtun, my answer to that was that on my mash tun i have a barbed tap too, so i just used a short section of tube, only enough to have both barbs touching and connect, no risk of collapse then, you could do it with solid pipe etc, but I like to remove mine easily for cleaning, and its just push fit over the barbs, there is no pressure there as its just the inlet side so no need for clamps.

Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
I got one of these pumps a while ago thanks to this post.
Cheers Lee.
I just wanted to save my back (and make my brewday more pleasant) so I'm only using it to shift my brewing liquor and wort where I can't use gravity i.e. filling the CLT and transfers from the MT to Boiler to FV. So to that end I've made a pumped underback using a 15L plastic bucket. I've used a float switch so that when the bucket empties the pump is switched off before it runs dry.
The float switch can't handle the current used by the pump so I had to construct a simple relay circuit:

The diodes are in case of any back EMF from either the pump or the relay's coil. The banana sockets are for the connection to the float switch. I've used some camlock connectors on the hose ends so that I can quickly change attachments. I find the pump's flow is pretty gentle at 12V (I might have some flow resistance due to the slightly reduced bore of the camlocks) but ocasionally I was finding that the pump was emptying the bucket too quickly so I may need to look at varying it. I have no problems with suction through the hop or grain beds as the bucket is filled by gravity. I'll try to take some pictures of it in action at my next brewday.

Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
I am looking for a pump to shift liquid between the HLT, mashtun, boiler. Is this pump up to this sort of work or is it only good for sparging?
Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
It's perfect for that tooMightyMouth wrote:I am looking for a pump to shift liquid between the HLT, mashtun, boiler. Is this pump up to this sort of work or is it only good for sparging?
FV: -
Conditioning: AG34 Randy's Three Nipple Tripel 9.2%, AG39 APA for a mate's wedding
On bottle: AG32 Homegrown Northdown ESB, AG33 Homegrown Cascade Best
On tap: -
Garden: 2x cascade, 2x Farnham whitebine (mathon), 2x northdown, 1x first gold
Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
Cool thanks, I ordered it anyway for sparging so if it does both then bonus.
Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
Can anyone point me in the direction of some food grade silicone hi temperature tubing to fit this pump? On the website they sell 12mm OD 2.5mm wall tubing but it is not food grade and actually looks a little small as the tubing has to be stretched over the inserts.
Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
Thanks Kev, I have ordered it from them.
Re: thought i'd share this, cheap foodgrade pump for sparge
Vossy was selling it over on thbf - I got mine from the home brew store - spot on!MightyMouth wrote:Can anyone point me in the direction of some food grade silicone hi temperature tubing to fit this pump? Just got 14W version and tested with 12V 2250mA. It transfered 50L of water from one 50L keg to another in ~8min.
