Stock Pots Warning - Vieira

Post by stevetk189 » Thu Jul 28, 2011 6:21 pm

Just a quick warning for anyone about to buy a large stock pot. I bought a 34 litre pot by an Italian company called Vieira from one of my local supermarkets. I've just filled it for the purpose of marking up a dip stick until I get my sight glass made and it's full at just over 24 litres.....

This basically means my eagerly awaited first brew day this Saturday has now been scrapped. I suppose I could do a half size brew but FFS!

Thanks a FFFFUUUUUUUUU lot Vieira!

For the record it's not even a case of the wrong label being put on it, the damn thing has been stamped as 34 litres.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR! :x

A lot of these kitchen pots are sized by the diameter... it isn't 34cm is it? :-k

Take it back and demand either a full refund or a "44" litre replacement - since it clearly fails to conform to the provisions of the Trades Description Act if the stamp does indeed refer to volume rather than diameter.

It's 330mm so you may be on to something there. The stamp definately shows 34L and it said on the label, 34 litres.

@ Rossi - Seriously peeved!

@hotmog - I don't know whether they'd take it back now it's been drilled etc. I'll have to brush up on French trades description laws.

You could always take it back and complain that it leaks ;)

I don't think the Trade Descriptions Act will help him where he lives, but surely goods must be as described, even in France.

They might have an issue with you returning it full of holes though... 8-[

Sounds pretty explicit to me.

At first I was like Image

but then I lol'd

At least with half size brews, my ingredients will last longer enabling a wider range of initial brews.

Still seriously pi$$ed off though.

re: goods as described - yes I'd say so but it will no doubt involve a committee of shrugging, confused beurocrats all passing the buck/book until lunch time and then not going back to work afterwards.

lol @ full of holes - I guess I should have filled it before I started modifying it, but then again... why would I?!

Well, why indeed. You would expect it to conform to the most basic specifications given.

Having said that, when I got my stockpot from Germany, first thing I did was to get the tape measure out and work out the volume... what does that say about me?

I suppose there's no chance at all that your measuring jug (or whatever other method you used) is out instead? I've been seriously caught out before by trusting the printed scales on a FV; could be worth measuring the pot's dimensions or weighing the water in it if there's any doubt.

Yeah first thing I did was get a UK, stamped pint glass and check it v the pint measurements in the jug. Jug is accurate. :(

How did you count the jugs? It wasn't a fingers & toes job was it?

We like to exhaust all possibilities!

:D I tried to count the jugs using my brain and some haddock but then I accidentally the whole jug. Is this bad?

Hmm, I had a similar counting problems weighing out 20kg grain bills in pathetic 1/2kg scales. I just bought some fish-weighing scales instead (presumably for enormous fish), but i'd not considered using the haddock itself... :-)
