Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Take it easy! Thats some brew day by the sound of it.
I've considered the dangers of drinking whilst brewing and on balance think its best not to....I have visions of falling into the boiler!

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Hello andyco.
I did this biab style and it turned out great.
I heated 35ltrs of water to acheive a mash at 67c.Mashed for 90mins.
I then did a 75c homogeneous mash for 10mins.
I do this because when learning about biab on this forum i think brybie did a post on biab and said he did this so just followed his lead
and it has done none of my brews any harm.
I then bring to the boil and add the hops and oranges ect as per recipe,i used waitrose organic as you need unwaxed oranges or you get no head.
Next time i may add 3 oranges and a lime to see how it goes.
No need for irish moss/protofloc ect as you need it to be hazey.
Chill, then add your chosen yeast and also move the oranges to the fv,i used dansatar munich as that was all i could get.
I bottled at 1.014 with 1tsp of sugar and after a couple of weeks it is now well carbed and great from the fridge.
I hope this helps you.
Kind regards Dean.

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
I'm making this brew as I text and in true male fashion ... a bit of help from those in the know.
I'm making a half batch, the yeast is WB-06, dosage is 11.5g to 20-30 litres as I'm only making about 12l should I use 6g of yeast ?
Thanks in advance
Andy

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
No point in keeping half a sachet. Just pitch it all, i say.
Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)
Cheers Dave-o
Here's what I done
For 12l Mini BIAB
1000g lager malt
1000g flaked (unmalted) wheat
500g wheat malt
250g porridge oats
15g Saaz - full boil
1 lime zest - 15 minutes
2 oranges zest (standard oranges!) - 15 minutes (I soaked the oranges in boiling water for 3 mins to remove the wax before I grated them )
5g crushed coriander seeds - 15 minutes
Yeast: WB-06
No Bobek as they were out of stock
16.5l water in the kettle/boiler, mashed @67 for 90 mins then fished the bag of grains out , boiled for 75mins and then put the orange, lime and coriander in for the final 15 mins.90 mins total
Fished out the orange and lime and put in the fv
Chilled for about 5 hours to get to 20 then pitched the yeast
Gravity 1.048
This is my 1st all grain and 2nd ever attempt at home brewing, I think it went well ..... nearly messed up when measuring my grains out, put in the boiler and then realised I missed measured and quickly sorted it out thank fook
I tasted the grains when I'd fished them out of the boiler and was surprised how sweet they tasted
Thanks Dave-o for the recipe and thanks Deanrpwaacs for the help with Biab style

Re: Cheap'n'Easy Light Wit (Hoegaarden-ish)

Take a gravity reading now and one in 24 hours. If it's moved you're fine. If not, give it a rouse.
What temp is it?

Will take a gravity as soon as, when you say rouse do you mean a stir up ?dave-o wrote:Take a gravity reading now and one in 24 hours. If it's moved you're fine. If not, give it a rouse.

As for temps its a bit up and down as its in my workshop, anywhere from 15-23 at the mo
