Naming a beer.....

Post by alxmonkey » Fri Sep 02, 2011 11:35 am

I knocked up an exprimental recipe and its reaching the conditioning stage but rig now its taste rather nice.

The recipe was:
hop tea (30g bramling cross, 10g fruggles, 5g progress)
1/2 can of Geordie scottish export
1/2 can of Geordie Mild
300g muntons enhancer
100g light malt
200g medium malt
300g dark malt
100g extra dark malt
Dry hop with 15g golding hop in secondary fermentor
18l water
Geordie mild yeast sachet

It sat in FV for 9 days before it relaxed a bit with OG of 1.044
Transferred to second vessel with 2.2 oz of dark malt
It hasbeen sitting for 7 days now and the gravity is just about levelled at 1.008

Itll be staying there till my taps arrive for my conditioning barrel, but on tasting it has a nice rich current flavour with mild bitterness that followed by a malty finish. Its rather nice and my partner who drinks Bass but only when in BURTON and its served from the barrel said it remnds her of a BASS style beer.

Point is, when making a random brew, how do people name the brew?

I just go by what the taste, smell or look makes me think of.

I made a stout earlier this year that had a right snotty layer of rubbish on the bottom after secondary (think a of sediment came over from the boil), so it became "Robs Old Snotter".

LOL, thanks.

I think each beer has its own character, especially when you're making your own stuff.

My latest is a very dark bitter called 'Brown Weasel' for no apparent reason other than it made me laugh :D .

I name my brews by whatever strikes my fancy or funny bone when I conceive the recipe.

Watching Prime Minister's questions with Tony Blair led to "Back Bench bitter" and "Honorable Member mild".
Watching Onslo on Keeping Up Appearences led to "Bone Idle bitter".
"Olde Sloppy Knickers' sounded like a fun name for a barleywine.
I'm just here for the beer.
