Most of the on-line suppliers I looked at (~12) do indeed ask you for a 'scrip for Videne. This is the cheapest I found that doesn't... Express Chemist ...although I have not ordered from them yet
People have had success by asking at their local Boots/ASDA/pharmacy who may order it for you if not in stock.

Probably.. you can get on persciption.. Not that you need one, as that isn't the case.. There are a load of better steriliser's out there, I don't see why you don't buy them!? Iodine based, like idorfor as well, people are reporting using as no rinse, even the manufacturer's of them do not recommend this as it can knacker your thyroid!

I just went into my local chemist and asked for it. The pharmacist hadn't heard of it and looked it up on the computer. Just told me it would be In tomorrow and I went back and picked it up. No awkward questions.
Re: videne prescription or not ?
Videne is a 'P' medicine - pharmacy only but doesn't need a prescription.
Re: videne prescription or not ?
Yeah, try any chemist in person. Usually get it in next day. Supermarket pharmacies might be a tad cheaper.
Definitely no prescription needed.
Definitely no prescription needed.

Many of the Online 'pharmacies' are for supplying to your local pharmacy . . . and to order from them you don't need a 'script' but do need to be a registered pharmacist.

Not in the concentrations we are talking left after draining!!testtube wrote:There are a load of better steriliser's out there, I don't see why you don't buy them!? The WHO upper limit for the intake of iodine through the diet is 1100 micrograms, with a minimum daily intake suggested of 75 milligrams (equivalent to 1/4 tsp of iodized salt). Now our Iodophor solution contains 12.5ppm of free iodine which if we assume we leave behind 5ml in a 500ml bottle is 6.25 micrograms of iodine per bottle so you would need to drink 11 or 12 500ml bottles per day to reach the minimum recommended daily dose.Iodine is an essential element that enables the thyroid gland to produce thyroid hormones.
Three iodine molecules are added to make T3 (triiodothyronine), and four for T4 (thyroxine) -- the two key hormones produced by the thyroid gland -- so iodine is essential to the production of these two hormones of the master gland of metabolism.
One needs the proper amount of iodine for optimal thyroid function.
A severe iodine deficiency can cause hypothyroidism, and even developmental brain disorders and severe goiter. Less severe iodine deficiency is linked to hypothyroidism, thyroid enlargement (goiter) and hyperthyroidism. At the other end of the spectrum, excessive iodine intake -- both severe and moderate -- is also associated with hypothyroidism and goiter.
Iodine Deficiency
There are many areas around the world where soils are deficient in iodine, and iodine must be added to the diet -- usually through iodized salt. In the U.S., for example, the area around the Great Lakes used to be known as the goiter belt because the soil is particular iodine-deficient, and this resulted in higher incidence of goiter among residents of the area. Earlier in the 20th century, however, iodized salt almost wiped out iodine deficiency in the U.S. entirely.

I't's a quote from someone who spoke to a man at the manufacturer, and when I readAleman wrote:Not in the concentrations we are talking left after draining!!testtube wrote:There are a load of better steriliser's out there, I don't see why you don't buy them!? Pregnancy and Lactation: Videne Surgical Scrub is not recommended for use during pregnancy because of the possibility of absorption through broken skin and subsequent interference with tests of neonatal thyroid function..
I'd just use as directed on the bottle..

As a hand scrub it is used at 12,500 mg/l free iodine . . . and yes I would be concerned at that level, but if you decide to follow the instructions on the bottle rather than the well documented instructions for brewing which say take 1.25ml and make it up to a litre to give you 12.5mg/l free iodine . . .plus allowing it to drain before reuse, the risks to health are about the same as using iodized table salt (most free flowing table salts contain potassium iodide) on your food.
Re: videne prescription or not ?
You may well be right, documented on the homebrew circuit is a bit of a worry, worse stuff in ciggy smoke.. I don't really understand why people go so mad for it really, apart from goes a long way.. VWP and chemipro oxy are ok, but are duff after 24h.. Like my beach for cleaning and soaking and squirting my star san about, last's and foams up nice..

Re: videne prescription or not ?
It's not just the documentation on the homebrew circuit, there are commercial iodophors that are used no rinse in the dairy industry, and it is from there that the use of iodophors 'migrated' into the brewing scene.

AMEN to that! starsan is most definitely made of the purest and most unadulterated WIN!testtube wrote:Like my beach for cleaning and soaking and squirting my star san about, last's and foams up nice..
