How long is too long with VWP?

Post by sunny_jimbob » Fri Sep 09, 2011 3:32 pm

Afternoon all.

I finally got a brew on at the weekend after a break of far too long. Obviously it's not ready for bottling yet, but I have probably a dozen or more 1 litre PET bottles which I had filled with a VWP solution ready for a brew that failed (due to toddler intervention!) last November. They haven't been opened, emptied or anything, and have just been sat around with the sterilising solution in them ever since. Should they still be OK to use if I give them a good rinse? Or should I just chuck them and acquire some more?

Thanks for any input :)

Hmm, on closer examination, there is a sediment of VWP at the bottom of the bottles which won't rinse out. Ah well, I have bottles for 12 pints, only 28 more to find/empty  before the weekend!

A lot of my bottles aren't stored well, so as standard now when I'm going to be bottling I gather them up and give them a good soak in soda crystal solution, then on the day run them through the dishwasher (on quick with no detergent), then immediately before bottling use fresh VWP and rinse well. Bit of a faff but at least I know they're clean.
