Please share your syphon tube cleaning techniques
Please share your syphon tube cleaning techniques
I always clean my syphon tubes immediately after using them and then hang them up to drip dry. When I come to use them the next time - I wash in hot water and a little washing up liquid, rinse and then use a 10% sulphite solution (5 mins) and then rinse again.
Having said all that, the tubes seem to build up a coating on the inside (after a long time).
Does anyone have any techniques for cleaning the inside of the tubes?

I coil the tube and submerge it in VWP cleaner/steriliser in a my fermenter prior to use, making sure that the tube is filled of course

My tube has some deposits - can only put boiling water through it.

OXI clean soak now and then and spray with Starsan and drop into a nice clean Bucket then rinse and Starsan again when next used.
String and 3 small bits of Foam sponge tied on and pulled through if deposits exist.

Thanks guys, much appreciated.
String and foam sounds like a great idea - must try that the next time a deposit builds up in my tubes!

Re: Please share your syphon tube cleaning techniques
I flush my syphon/beer-transfer tubing out 'as immediately as possible' with very hot water and then give a final rinse with starsan (so that any residual moisture is more resistant to mould), then hang so that it can drain. I flush with starsan or peracetic acid sanitisers before next use, but don't clean it a second time. I don't really see any notable build-up of deposits with this method.
In times past, I soaked overnight in percarbonate or bleach based cleaning/sanitising solutions before and after every use (I do so still from time to time as a thorough clean) and I got more deposits then; I've a suspicion that the soaking may in fact contribute to the deposits through scale or something, but I'm rubbish at chemistry so wouldn't like to go beyond 'suspicion'.
Cheers

Re: Please share your syphon tube cleaning techniques
I usually soak it in a soda crystal solution in one of my FVs, then rinse it inside and out with clean water. After that I put a thumb over one end, spray a load of starsan down it, thumb over the other end, then pour it back and forth to coat the whole inner surface with foam. I store it until the next brew inside an FV with a liberal spraying of starsan over everything.
On the rare occasion that the insides of the tubes look like they need a bit more cleaning, I make up a gallon of hot soda crystal solution and syphon it back and forth through the tube a couple of times. That's always shifted everything for me.

Once a deposit has built-up just bin the tube and buy a new one. That stuff is cheap, especially if you buy a whole roll.

Rinse with hot water, drain and fill with peracetic acid, cap and store, next time drain and use.

Cap 'n' store sounds good to me.
Cap with 2 taps? or do you know of a place I can get caps?
