test kit results
just picked up a salifert test kit my results came out at 5.26 does this seem high or is it ok if so then how do i start off putting these results in to the water calc

IIRC 5.26 meq/L x50 converts it to 263 CaCO3 Total Alkalinity (for the top-left box in the calculator).
Mine varies between 1.49 and 2.74 meq/L so it would be unusually high for me, but I don't know how it varies around the country. Did you try the check solution? that should give you confidence in the results.

I'm not at home at the mo so can't check the specifics, but the check solution has a known alkalinity marked on the bottle; if you test this test solution instead of water, you should get results that correlate with what its marked as (IIRC it uses the dkH column in their table).dazer23866 wrote:i wonderd what that other bottle was, how to i use that ?
There isn't a lot of it, but its enough for a test or so, and helps reassure you that you're doing things correctly. Its probably doubly worth doing these days as I remember a thread that suggested they've changed the quantities used in the test a bit, but in that case may have accidentally included the old instructions for the old quantities.. which would also mean that table in the FAQ section may not be applicable any more, I'm not sure.

If your alkilinity reading is 5.26 X 50 = 263 if you want to brew bitter or light beers leaving a alkilinity residue of 30 add 1.29ml of CRS to all brewing water and 0.5grms DLS per litre of the brewlentgh. So for a 23 litre brew 11grms . say half in the dry grist and half in the boil.

Thanks for all the help
i have just retested and yes this is the right calculations, imputed them into the forum calculator for 40 liters of water to be treated and gave me the results to add gypsum,Epsom salts,common salt, CRS ,should all this be added to the water or should the gypsum be added to the mash or half to the mash and half to the boil

Add the amount of salts the calculator gives you for the mash liquor total into your grist for the mash.
Then get an amount of the salts from the calculator for your final brew length ie 23ltrs and add this into the boiler as you sparge.
