Water treatment headache

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

so which additions do i add to the hlt, mash and boil.
Seems no clear information on this.

Also i read in graham wheeler's book byobra that ph is important (but doesn't tell you how to adjust it :x ), i'm plnning on getting some ph strips from here. http://www.the-home-brew-shop.co.uk/aca ... of_50.html

But what do i do with the results from the ph test, and how do i adjust it to the magic 5.3ph.

thanks all

You treat all the water your going to use with the CRS and camden tablets . For the mash, type in the amount of mash water required and add the total salts that the calculator gives you. For the boil add the final brewlength amount ie 23ltrs into the calculator to give you the salts req to add to the boiler. I beleive that is how it's done.

hmmmm..

ok
so for a 23litre brew lenght i treat 45 litres with crs

add all the required salts in to the mash, going on the amount of water going into the mash, say 10 litres.

total volume into the boiler is (normally for me) 29 litres, so 10 minus 29 is 19, so i then treat the water in the boiler with the salts for 19 litres.

are we both singing together or have i just shown how thick i am.

Nearly right :D If your final beer is going to be of 23ltrs then you need to treat for the 23ltrs and add into your boiler the calculated salts.

All the rest is correct. Test your PH when you mash to see if you need to fine tune next time.

Is that clearer?

Yes clearer thank you

How do you fine tune the ph, which salts change what, is there any way you can alter it on the day, ie just after testing it.

Cheers

you should find that your PH should be in the ball park on the day. I don't know if you can change it to much in the mash on the day, but i know gypsum lowers the PH. Some of the water gurus on hear can maybe answer you that one.
