Timothy Taylors Landlord Tips
Timothy Taylors Landlord Tips
I am trying to gather info on doing a Timothy Taylor Landlord clone ,just tried one of them and it is just the sort of flavour i am looking to achieve for that style.
I have the GW book and so the recipe, just wondering if there is anything else I could find out from anyone who has tried this before. What sort of water, how long the mash and boil ,how long to wait before getting stuck ,bottle or corrnie?
Cheers Adam

The GW recipe is damn good.
Some have taken a small portion of wort and caramelised it by concentrative heating but the only mod I have made is to remove this process and replace with around 5% light crystal malt. Tastes Cock On!!!

Re: Timothy Taylors Landlord Tips
I pop a little crystal in as well, and a little wheat to aid head retention, but apart from that I pretty much follow the Graham Wheeler recipe.
As it happens I will be brewing it tomorrow.

I think the 100% pale malt in GW's book lacks the subtle caramel sweetness that TTL has. Nice beer nevertheless though.
I think some kind of brewing sugar is used in the original imo.

Re: Timothy Taylors Landlord Tips
I grew up in the next town along from the TT Knowle Spring Brewery and began my drinking career on TTL, plenty of it too! Even 25 years on it's still for my money the best pale ale in the world!
I have a batch that's just ready for drinking and it's top drawer! I would recommed upping the EBU's by about 25% from GW recipe and you could add an extra 10g of styrian golding hops for a post boil steep - this really increases the hop aroma (if desired). I will also increase the back malt by about 50% as mine came out a little paler than the original. The water at the brewery comes from a spring in the gritstone bedrock so is very soft and clear, however I don't know how/if they treat their water so I just treat as per a usual bitter.
I use Notty or Girvin yeast with good results but i'm sure other strains would also work well.

Re: Timothy Taylors Landlord Tips
i use to do that but not sure if it really does anything... I think adding some crystal malt or melanoidins will do more... How different is the cask from bottle? I tried the bottle only and its a fine beer, firm bitterness and its pretty dryDennis King wrote:SnapRunwell-Steve wrote:

This is the 1st "recipe" I've done for a long while and even then its slightly tweaked. Was a spur of the moment thought driving home yesterday, just one of my favorite beers.GARYSMIFF wrote:recipe!!!!!!!!!!! a Hand-bag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! come on chaps brew your own, but have to say its in my top 10

Re: Timothy Taylors Landlord Tips
My first recipe I've done for a while too, but I do like Landlord and was brewing something for the relatives to drink at Christmas.
I've tweaked it a bit as well, added some Crystal and Wheat, and upped the late hops a little bit too. Will be fermenting with WLP005, so a new yeast for me as well.

I've use WLP005 on Landlord clones before, good choice. I'm also using a new yeast, brewlabs knocked me up the old Ridleys IPA strain. If the starter is anything to go by should go like a train.

Re: Timothy Taylors Landlord Tips
Oops, something went a bit haywire today, just tested the Gravity, 1.036, as I was aiming for 1.042 thats a bit of a drop.
The mash was a fraction cooler than normal, 65C as I didn't warm the grain at all last night, but I'm sure that won't have had that much effect.
Oh well, at least the relatives won't be getting too drunk and start shouting and swearing at each other, actually they probably will, alcohol is not normally required for an argument.
