Post by kck74 » Mon Nov 14, 2011 9:35 pm

Hi Chaps,

Having a play on Beersmith, still years down the line I don't really know what i'm doing with recipes but most of the time it comes out nice :D

So, this is my Red amber ale thingy................

Ingredients

0.25 kg Wheat, Torrified (3.3 EBC) Grain 4 3.7 %
5.55 kg Pale Malt (2 Row) UK (5.9 EBC) Grain 1 82.8 %
0.45 kg Amber Malt (43.3 EBC) Grain 2 6.7 %
0.45 kg Caramel/Crystal Malt - 10L (19.7 EBC) Grain 3 6.7 %
1.0 pkg Safale US-05
28.35 g Target [11.00 %] - Boil 90.0 min Hop 5 24.2 IBUs
28.35 g Challenger [7.50 %] - Boil 0.0 min Hop 8 0.0 IBUs
28.35 g Willamette [5.50 %] - Boil 5.0 min Hop 7 2.3 IBUs
28.35 g Cascade [5.50 %] - Boil 60.0 min Hop 6 11.3 IBUs

Beer Profile

Est Original Gravity: 1.076
Est Final Gravity: 1.014
Estimated Alcohol by Vol: 6.2 %
Bitterness: 37.8 IBUs
Est Color: 17.9 EBC

Any glaring mistakes? Apart from a crappy name!!!!!!!!!!

Cheers in advance

i rarely stick to a recipe, just try things that should taste good, usually works for me, that brew looks fine to me, is tho 0.45 kg caramel malt just in the wrong place or is it added late?
no palate, no patience.

Drinking - of course

I'd say it seems strange giving the cascade 60 minutes and the challenger 0 mins. Is that the wrong way round or are you just trying something different?

To be honest, I was trying Somet a bit different, but if anyone has reason not to try this, please tell!!!!!

I like the bitter taste of challenger :)

Well, boiling Cascade for more than 15 mins verges on hop abuse IMO, but perhaps that's just me!

Or FWH the cascade to keep some flavour/aroma?

Does that REALLY work???

I've heard mixed reviews on the subject, John Palmer thinks it does!

He states that you should only FWH 30% of aroma, thats only 10g in this recipe. would this make that much difference?

Cheers

Whatever, I BIAB and my bittering addition sits in the mashtun/boiler (but outside the bag) from dough-in. Which I guess makes it a Mash Hop and FWH! But I've always done it like that and like my results. I don't have the patience do perform a proper experiment to see if it makes a difference!
