Shere Khan IPA

Post by Mattb » Mon Sep 26, 2011 10:46 pm

I'm just treating the water for this now, ready to start a brew day tomorrow. It's based on the recipe for Thornbridge's Kipling here (which looks suspiciously like it was posted by someone in the know).

It was intended to follow that recipe exactly - but when I checked the stores I found I was a little short of Munich, so I've improvised with what I have got in stock ...

If this works well I might try a black IPA version and call it Bagheera IPA, once I do some research and find out what the magic is to do a black IPA without getting the harsh bitterness of a black malt or roasted barley.

For black IPA use the dehusked carafa I,II or III if you can get it there
De-Husked Carafa III: De-husked version contributes color without the astringency that can result from roasting the husk. This is the darkest de-husked roast malt. Recommended malt for any dark beer including, Bock, Altbier, Stout, Porter, and Schwartzbier.
Works great
Cheers

I've written up my brewday on my blog now, with pics and related mardle.

Cheers for the info re: Carafa III, aceuass. I've read elsewhere that a cold-infusion of that is the way forward, to get colour without any of the astringency.

Hi Matt

I'll be very interested to hear how this turns out. Jaipur and Kipling are 1st and 2nd on my favourite beer list but I wish I could get them more regularly on the Wirral :(
On another note. Is there a problem with your blog? After I posted a comment the other day I've not been able to post again. The page just refreshes and the comment box goes blank.......

Cheers Tom

Hey Matt - seems like you need a hop filter

Hey Matt

How has this turned out?
I've got something similar planned for my next brew. If it's even half as nice as Kipling I'll be happy :)

Cheers Tom

It's in the cellar clearing: bottling this weekend if I get a chance.

So in short: not sure yet. I'll keep you updated though.

Hi Matt

You must have the patience of a saint. You brewed this ages ago, I wouldn't have the will power to leave it alone this long =P~

Cheers Tom

No, not the patience of a saint at all. A five-week old baby. We used to be able to do things like look after brews, or go to the pub, but not any more :)

ive got four. i feel your pain.

you can get caraffa(1,2 and3) from clive at brupaks, works a charm soupdragon, you dont have to cold steep and can end up as black as a politicians soul with very few roasty notes

try roman black from george wright, i believe another couple of local breweries are going to do a black ipa soon as well

Had some Cascadian Black from the Saltaire brewery while I was down in Norwich with the missus in October during the spoons festival. I couldn't make my mind up about it, it was tasty enough but just not my cup of tea. Needless to say I won't be looking into making a black ipa any time soon.

Cheers Tom
