Stainless steam extract
I have been reading through several posts on here regarding steam extract from a boiler, most either using flexible ducting or pvc waste pipe. Just wondered if anyone had thought of building a stainless one, heres my idea.....
Thermo pot lid with hole cut through both layers, one end of http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/320382691092? ... 1423.l2649 this fitting being pushed / pulled through the hole (see if I could get one made with a lip on it) the other end then with a push fit onto a perment 2 inch ss pipework fixed through an external wall.
Any ideas???

Re: Stainless steam extract
Hi,
I'm sure it would work; my 40mm plastic waste pipe did, so 2" seems fine.
My only problem was with power control; it was fine later on (with my heating power vs losses setup anyway), but initially all the foaming was 'far' too much to keep the lid on - I had to take it off to let the initial boilover tendencies subside, and that sort of defeated the contained/vented approach.
Similar issue with the end of the process; my IC tails meant the lid couldn't be fitted properly; but you could get around that with CFC or plate cooler - or better routed connections to the IC.
Cheers

Re: Stainless steam extract
Well heres the idea now (parts ordered).
2" skin fitting through the lid of the pot, 2" street elbow fitting to give a right angled bend. The street fitting then coupled up to a hose to take the gas away.
Just wondering now what the best sort of hose would be bearing in mind the street elbow fitting is likely to be 55 - 60mm diameter any thoughts?????
Thanks

Silicone tubing is going to be the most hyginic/easiest to clean for when you get the inevitable boilover

Re: Stainless steam extract
Well I got home tonight to find my order had been delivered so a quick update, the street end of the fitting is 59.27mm (or 60mm near enough) which does fortuately lend itself to a wide range of pipework.
Thanks for the suggestion of the silicone hose, just been looking at the car tuning parts.
A couple of pics of the shinnesssss for you. (wouldnt take long to empty a pot if it was used for drainage!!!)
1/2 beside the 2"

Re: Stainless steam extract
I use a 4" tumble dryer flexi hose pipe from my lid to the wall where it vents outside. I get a lot of condensate pooling in it where there are low points, so consider having the pipe running downward and outside or/and insulating the pipe.
keep the pics coming!

Re: Stainless steam extract
Well just finished the hole cutting and fitting the parts together, just need to find a better flexible hose rather than the pu hose, but at least everything is looking shiney.
(& yep that is a 2" camlock in the piccy
)

Re: Stainless steam extract
Steve,
I was hoping that the lid just resting on the pot, ie not held down with the thermo pot clamps would be enough?, the sealing strip on the pot being taken off (normally falls off anyway in use).

Interesting! Are you going to use a fan or just let the steam escape?
When's your next brew? Keen on see ing how that works!

Re: Stainless steam extract
When I eventually get the boiler positioned in it new location, it will be sited next to an external wall so intheory the vent pipework will only be a the max approx 1 meter long, in which case I was going to just let the steam escape naturally. Will have to give it a wet water run once everything is in position.
As for the next brew, still working on improving my "Spitfire" Clone with Irish yeast. (once I`ve drunk all the stout I brewed for xmas
)
Cheers
