Recipes with New Zealand Hops

Post by Middo » Tue Dec 06, 2011 11:47 pm

I'm planning on doing a brew with only New Zealand hops but not sure which ones to try. Originally I was just going to go for Nelson Sauvin and Motueka, until I started reading other posts about Riwaka, Green Bullet, Pacific Gem, etc. I'll probably end up buying several different varieties but will only use two or three in my recipe. Does anyone have any good recipes for a hoppy pale ale with NZ hops? Or can you recommend which ones go well together?

Only used Nelson Sauvin which I did in a single hop brew and thought it was one of the best I've brewed. Plan to try a few more in the new year.

I have 200g each of Motueka and Riwaka, I'm planning on a brew for each. I'll be using pale malt with a little light crystal, Magnum to bitter then hop bursting at the end. That should give me a pretty good idea what they taste like.
I pinched the Magnum idea from SNPA and I've done this a few times with pretty good results.
In or near Norwich? Interested in meeting up monthly to talk and drink beer? PM me for details.

I did a pale with Rakau a couple of months ago and it is really very tasty indeed. It is not a blow your socks off hop but subtly fruity. Recipe is HERE

Cheers!

Hmmm, didn't realise Kipling was a Nelson Sauvin single hop brew. I've just ordered some NS and also some Green Bullet. Will probably use GB for bittering and then add loads of NS at the end of the boil. Anyone used these two together before?

riwaka and matueka blend well together, pacific gems a bit harsh but as long as you dont go mad on it its a nice hop ,rakaus superb, so's nelson sauvin and it goes well with pacific jade

theres a few experimental ones coming next year ive put me name down for some :D

in short if its antipodean and it doesnt have pride of ringwood written on the label its probably going to be great!

Hi mate used a few of the NZ hops .Done a loosely based fatyak ,clone but hoppier than the commercial. Grab yourself a can of coppers real ale add 1 kg of light dried malt add 150 -200 grams of dried wheat , dry hop with 25 g of nelson and add when fermentation has finished or at least past day 4 and use an 05 yeast or whatever yank yeast does the trick for you make to about 21 liters. Try and leave the hops in for at least 7 days
Just bottled about a week ago a coopers Aus pale 1.5 light dried ,250 grams of medium crystal , 25 grams of Raiwka ,dry hopped with a nothwest wyeast .Taste nice on an early sample

I've got a single hop, all late hopped, Rakau amber on tap at the moment. The hop flavour is surprisingly delicate for the style of recipe and seemed to take a while to develop properly. It's a good beer now with a sort of pineapple like fruitiness from the hop and a raisin like flavour I reckon is from the malt (Special B).

They could best be described as "workmanlike". I do use them a lot for authenticity but they are underwhelming compared to the "new" breed.

I used some NZ Cascade the other day and found it to be very good. The aroma and flavour was pretty much identical to the US version and there was plenty of both. I was quite impressed. Cascade and Citra are about my favourite hops - shame there is so little to go around at the moment :(

While I'm here - is Green Bullet good for a single hop brew? I've got 100g of it burning a hole in the fridge.
