Right, collected 20L before SG dropped to 1006, can i top up with water to 25L or do i boil and then top up to 25L?

I boil first, measure og in the fermenter then top up to your required amount and og stopping short of the 25lt if that needs to be.
What efficiency is the recipe worked on, you might have fallen short of it so therefore you wont get 25lt at the estimated og of the recipe.

Hi Wez
How were you sparging was it batch or fly? Out of that grain bill i would have been looking for about 7 gallons of collected wort.
Did you temp correct your hydro reading (better still cool the sample to about 20C and measure it).

If you haven't temp corrected i would think there is more sugars to be had in there (you could try a batch sparge with 1 to 1 and a half gallons, mixed up real well) , then again it is your first batch its not going to make that much diff.
What about a hydro reading of your 20L collected wort?

I would probably top up with water preboil at least you know its going to be sterile cause your going to boil the life out of it.

Right i've gone for topping up the boiler to 25L taken a sample it's 1040 at 52 degrees so would that make it 1050???

Looking good, thats going to give you a pretty hefty gravity you could probably top it up more because you're going to lose a good gallon or so in the boil.

Right after adding water i have ended up with 25L @ 1046 20 degrees I think that this is an efficiency of 74 could someone let me know if i have got that right. Just need to add the yeast now :?:
